I would like to get my filly done ASAP, but as the 'marker' needs to stay put for longer on a grey will she need sedation? Personal experiences please. Thanks x
Yes - if you're going for the 4 digit mark, then sedation is a must.
I had my boy fully sedated for his, the issue with greys is because it needs to stay on for longer, sometimes the first mark starts to thaw and hurt before they've finished doing the 3rd/4th mark.
My grey mare had 4 digits on her shoulder and wasn't sedated. She wriggled a bit, mainly because of the amount of pressure they have to put on, but was fine. She is pretty amenable generally though and we can do most things (including repro scan) without sedation.
Actually, it was 5 marks as one was for loss of use so was an L within a circle, done separately.
Farmkey are four digits, Freezemark are three. I don't see any need to sedate, it is a very very short time longer on the skin with greys, and is all done very quickly.
I loaned a grey mare who had a bald mark done (that is what they do on greys, burn hair off leaving pink skin). She had no-end of problems in the summer (despite copious amounts of sun block) with it burning & swelling whre flies nibbled at it (good site as no hair. I'd think very carefully. Personally I refused LOU payment on a grey horse so she didn't have to undergo a bald mark.
I think I'll contact freezemark as she is red and white but mostly white but 3 digits may fit in a red patch just below the shoulder. Thanks for the replies.
