Hi,
I'm sorry if this sounds thick but how do you go about freeze marking your horse? Does the vet do it or a certain company?

Also on the front of my horses passport there is the "life number" and then a "micro chip number" I've assumed that means he's got a micro chip but am not 100 per cent sure (can someone tell me if this is the case?) can the vet scan them to tell you this?

Sorry if these questions sound stupid or obvious but any advice is appreciated,

thanks

perhaps get your vet to scan for microchip when he does his next visit so you can be sure it is there. freezebranding is done by a couple of companies, i used farmkey and they were very good. hope this helps...

There are two companies that carry our Freezemarking. They are Farmkey and Freezemark. The advantage of Freezemarking is that it is visible and can be read by anyone.
Your vet should be able to read your horses Micro-chip with his scanner, however not all scanners read all Micro-chips.

Your vet should check a 'new horse' on his first visit ie scan for a chip and check it fits the passport and look to see if the horse is signed out of the food chain as any prescriptions like bute will need to be recorded if the horse is not signed out.

Have you updated the passport to your name?
ie sent it off to the Passport Issuing organisation with the necessary fee?

Do check on www.nedonline.co.uk that putting your chip number into SEARCH does bring up your passport and associate yourself with your horse on there--quite easy to add a picture. You will need to register and buy a little credit.

Depending where you are in the country there is a third freezemarking company--Northern Brand based in Cumbria. Farmkey do travel all of UK on a regular basis and you will need to fit in with them.
