Debating wether to get my neddys freeze marked.
Does it actually put thieves off now? I would say so but nowadays I think they just don't really give a monkeys about stuff like. Any opinions & thoughts would be most grateful

IMO there's nothing like having a visible sign of ownership to deter a thief; and I think this is the view of Horsewatch and others too.

I heard a story (sorry can't remember where) about a horse who was stolen from a field, along with some others - and when he was eventually located he was - unbelievably - found grazing by the side of a road near to a ferryport. He was the only horse in the bunch who'd been freezemarked, and presumably whoever had taken him had discovered that and basically just chucked him out the back of the lorry or whatever. Heaven alone knows what happened to the rest of the poor horses, but this one was freezemarked, and was eventually re-united with his owner.

So I'd definately go for it without hesitation, and have done with my boy. Anything that makes him less attractive to a thief basically.

I can assure you that a Freezemark would assist in the recovery of a stolen horse as anyone can read a freezemark. Get your horse freezemarked in a place so that it is visible when being ridden(shoulder, neck or rump) . Also ensure that you add the freezemark to your horses record on www.nedonline.co.uk so that you as the owner can be easily alerted if your horse is found.

I had two horses stolen, and they were located in about 12 hours, having been 'dumped'. We assume because they were Freezemarked and could not be easily hidden or sold on. Go for it, worth every penny IMHO.

I would freeze mark again. It hurts a few hours afterwards(if you have ever had a wart burnt off its just like that, doesnt hurt being done but its a while after it looks sore)!

I think its a good visible deterrent and I always notice them on other horses.

Microchip too.

I dont remember it being expensive years ago and the lady that came from Farmkey was brilliant and very experienced as I had never had this done before. I think its more the fact someone strange is putting something on their coats. I had to keep stuffing his face with pony nuts to distract him.

What are people's experiences with having greys or coloureds done? I had two skewbalds done years ago and both come out well as they had some convenient brown patches! I now have a piebald but his shoulder and back are white. I've seen 3 greys and coloureds recently where it hasn't come out and is pretty much unreadable. I have previously had every horse I have bought freezemarked but since I saw them I was intending to get him done but now I'm not so sure.

Phone seems to have moved my words around but that should read that I was intending to get him done before I saw how the other 3 had come out.

I would definitely recommend Freezemarking

Many years ago, my lad (and 2 others) were stolen from his yard overnight. We found 2 of them later the next day dumped in a field with someone elses rugs on them and some people living near the field heard and saw a horsebox reversing up the lane. I definitely think my lad and the other horse only got as far as the field due to being freezemarked, as the unmarked one had gone.

My lad is a wussy so and so, but with a big haynet didn't even notice them doing it.

I would however recommend (as PeterNatt has already said) that you freezemark somewhere visible, i.e shoulder at all times. Unfortunately my lad was freezemarked on his back, but due to it rubbing on his saddle when its clipped I have to leave now so its not clear to see with his winter coat

Thanks Guys. Very much appricated. They are micro-chipped but that doesn't seem to put thieves off with the tales I've heard.

I have 2 greys and they are freezemarked on their shoulders. The iron is held on for longer to destroy the hair follicle so no hair grows back as opposed to white hair. Just have to remember the sun block in summer

I hve had some greys done. They hold the irons on slightly longer. You do need to keep the hair clipped over the winter, but it is not a problem.
