If i chuck my horse out to grass i want to get her chipped and freezemarked (i know this should be done anyhow)!

Has anyone got their horses done?

How much does it cost per horse? any issues with it?

i want her shoulder done so its more obvious

thanks :)

thanks

would i be wasting my money or isit a worthwhile investment??

im also going to get her chipped - that worth the money too? or one of the other?

Farmkey did my mare and I was very pleased with them. The lady who came was very calm and patient, which was perfect because my mare had never been clipped before and they have to clip where the mark will go. I was able to totally distract the mare from the marking process with a few treats, so I don't think that it could have been too painful as she is a wimp. ;)

Photo of the end result. :)

If its one or the other Id go for a freezemark as a visual deterrent. Also if she were stolen, the man-in-the-street can identify a freezemark whereas unless youve a chip reader and randomly scan bay mares as a hobby, its less likely someone would identify her in a field somewhere.
If you can have a chip too thats grand. It seems to vary how much they cost, but one vet I used for chips I thought it was very cheap!

thanks all :)

i was thinking freezemarking over chips as its visual - especially if shes going to play out in a field forever!

but i will look into doing both (Freezemark first)

dosent say a price on their website? how much is it to freezemark?

do i have to pay yearly to stay on their records?

thanks :)

Got mine freezemarked and chipped. Some vet practices do special offers with chipping, free worm counts etc. That how i got mine chipped, get one chipped, second was half price.

okay thanks all :)

whats the difference between farmkey and freezemark.biz??

will give them a ring this week and get them out asap :)

thanks

Hi, I've just had mine done, really impressed with them, think it varies price wise, but mine was just over £50, very quick and painless, includes registration to the database and also then you can register for subsequent years I think it's £17 or a discount if you do 2/3 years at a time? Well worth it!

I'm about to have my grey mare freeze marked since a recent break in. I have heard that these marks can be "cut out"!!! Has anyone else heard of this? Also, since she had to have a bald mark, is it better on the shoulder or flank?

If your horse is grey then they will have to apply a bald mark which can only be done on the shoulder.
Not heard of the freeze mark being cut out.

I had my 2 done with Farmkey, they did take a while to come out, but as mine are both grey and need the bald mark (plus thin skinned arabs), i had the micro mark (horse shoe) put on the well behaved one, and my gelding ( who I know wouldn't have tolerated this without sedation) had the full number.

I'm glad I did it this way, as I'd heard of them getting to the 3rd or 4th mark on a grey, and the "freezing" wearing off on the earlier mark, and then not being able to complete without a second visit or vet.

They've both been micro chipped for years, but i thought this was an added deterrent.

Had one done a couple of months ago, I think it was about fifty quid. Quick, efficient, nice lady. My youngster was fine with the clippers, kicked out at the irons, but less each time, and stood there like a dope for the final iron. As he's skewbald, she marked him on the back as there wasn't enough 'colour' on the shoulder.

Archie was freezemarked 3 times before I gave up as the mark, a bald mark, doesn't show. He must be exceptionally thick skinned. I had it done on his shoulder so if he was stolen it could be seen if he was being ridden. However, in hindsight I would have just gone anywhere with a bit of black on him so the hair grew white. I also have him microchipped.
