freeze markings

i am looking at buying a pony and she has a freeze mark... underneath her freeze mark is a letter 'L' in a circle but we do not no what it means please help!

Loss of Use, insurance jobby

we no it is loss of use but the pony is sound and has been for at least a year it shows no sign of injury vet has checked it out and cannot find any lasting damage.

You sound as if you've already made your mind up about buying the pony saying vet say's it's sound etc. The pony has been in car terms 'An Insurance right off'. For that to happen, & for a company to pay out full amount there must have been a major problem. You will never get insurance covber on the animal from any insurance company.

If you withold the info from a company when you make application you could also be liable to prosecution for a criminal offence. If you do buy you'll need plenty of your own money to pay any large vet bills.....as said inprevious post I'd steer clear of this one, there are plenty of good ponies out there that come without this amount of baggage.
 
I'm guessing the pony is cheap then? As you really don't want to be paying alot for this pony. As you can never insure it, so it needs to be risk money for you.
This pony could go jumping and the old injury (whatever it is) could flare up and then thats it, you have an injured pony with no insurance to pay for the bills! IMHO I wouldn't do it, unless you know the genuine reason for the loss of use claim. Can you trace previous owners? Is this a private sale? How old is the pony?
 
I really wouldn't touch it with a barge pole! The L is there for a reason,and they would only put it on if she really was a total loss of use i.e)no riding.Thats what my vet said anyway.Dont forget just because the vet can't find anything wrong doesn't mean she's ok.My mare has had £2500 spent on trying finding out whats wrong with her and 2 different vets are none the wiser
 
as everyone has said it stands for Loss of Use (LOU). I think that if you buy it you will have problems getting it insured, as I have claimed LOU on one of my mares and tried to insure her with another insurance group - they wouldnt touch her as another insurance group had paid out on her.

Just because she has had the LOU mark on her, doesnt mean shes a right off. Id be challenging the sellers of the pony as to why she has the mark and what were the reasonings for the claim. There has to be a good cause for ti to have been done as the insurers get in touch with the vet direct for their input, then they have their own vets look into the information the vet has given and they then make their decision. I know quite a few people who have tried to claim LOU and not been given it as the insurers vets have declined the claim.

My mare has been paid out for LOU on ringbone in both her front feet meaning she is unable to do fast work or jump - however this doesnt stop her being a complete and utter idiot in the field!

Personally I would stay far away from it. Too much going on to buy
