Freezemark or Microchip

I need to do something about security marking my mare.

She is grey so not sure if freezemarking would work. Has anyone any experience of freezmarking a grey?

Or should I get her microchipped.

Any advice please.

Most people say get both, but from experience greys tend to need there freeze marks re done a few times and sometimes they dont take straight away, it your decision though

I've got both and I think that maybe with a grey it would be quite a wise idea...they give them bald marks rather than white marks and these can grown over if not clipped regularly

Murphy is Micromarked and Microchipped. He is a greyish roan colour on his back and it's actually easy to miss the Micromark unless you clip the area off. I think when I was booking it they said that with greys they have to hold the brand on longer to kill the hair so it goes bald rather than just white? Sure I'll be corrected if I've got that wrong

yes, but microchips can migrate. i have mine freezemarked, as it is a visual deterrant to thieves, and also visual ID - anyone can see the number and state it when talking to the RSPCA or ILPH. you need specialist equipment to search for a chip that may have shifted.
there are pros and cons to both, but i personally opted for freezemarks. - however mine is a bay, so the mark is very visible.

Personally I have both - everything I can do to get him back is worth having, chip, freezemark, death contract on anyone taking him.....
