Freezemark - shoulder or saddle area??

saddle area. i know you'd have to sacrifice a few days riding, but at least it wouldn't be seen if showing or anything

Microchip!!!!!

But if i was freeze branding i'd have it on the saddle area, really unsightly on the shoulder. It is neat and tidy and lined up nice on the back.

have you made up your brand?

OH's mare is on the shoulder....which is the usual recommended place, and thats where OH wanted it......my old horse was done in the same place, left shoulder ...but daughters pony is done on the saddle area, left side- as he shows a lot and it just looks nicer IMO. Although judges aren't supposed to mark you down for it.

Current horse is microchipped - I want him freezemarked but he's such a wuss I think I may need to have him sedated (but then again, I needed to twitch him in order to sedate him so his teeth could get done- you get the general idea:rolleyes:)

I made a conscious decision to have Mason marked on his shoulder.
I wanted people to be able to see his freezemark when I'm riding him.
If he ever gets stolen, I want to be able to read it if someone else is riding him.

Shoulder

I am guessing you are freezemarking as you never want to have your horse stolen?

My friend has a very nice coloured mare, she gets comments almost everytime she rides (and she says some of these are from the local 'travelling community'), her reply always includes the fact her girl is Freezemarked, if she was done on her shoulder maybe these comments would reduce?

For those who prefer microchipping - it is a good start but I cannot see the microchip when visiting horse sales and neither can those at the ports... the authorities will confirm that they do not have time to scan every animal that comes through, nor would they follow up the microchips until the sale/ship had gone through.
For the local Police officer or walker that has limited knowledge on horses who may be aware of a stolen horse, a Freezemark gives them something to look for rather than a 'brown' or 'white' horse!

Wherever the horse is brown/black coloured rather than white. Mine's done on the flank (rear of ribcage). I would avoid doing under the saddle as this area is already compromised by taking the weight/sweat/rubbing of a saddle, rider, roller, etc, without freezemarking the skin in that area too.

Shoulder. I don't even notice it anymore and they don't count against you at shows anyway. :)

This is something I have been thinking about for a while, Personally I am not keen on them and think they look messy, but at least you can see them unlike a microchip, so its more of an obvious deterrent to a thief, I have herd that there is a small brand you can get that means your horse is microchiped.

But I am sure you do get used to seeing them

Mine are done on the shoulder. With the minis it means I can clip out the freezemark during the winter and it doesn't let the wet get into their coats. This way it's still readable (?) despite the four inch fluff!
