Planning to get my guys done one way or the other very soon after a recent scare, & just wanted your views on which you would have done. They are all already microchipped but obviously this can't be seen.

I'm leaning towards the freezemark as it can be identified by non-horsey people too, but am worried it could affect the future showing potential of a couple of the youngsters :s I know its not meant to but does it? Would it put you off buying a show pony if it was freezemarked?

Would you go for shoulder or back? On a coloured can you have them done anywhere where they have a patch of colour, eg stifle/flank area? & if they have colour on say the shoulder can you still choose to have it done on the flank?

How old do the youngsters have to be to be able to have the freezemark?

When you had yours done did you sedate them? with sedalin or vet out? One of the youngsters is petrified of new people, so is a sod for the vet & guessing she will be awful to freezemark :(

Also which company would you go for? Farmkey vs Freezemark? Are there any other companies?

Sorry for the 20questions, I'm in panic mode after a transit van came up the drive the other day asking for 'sheds that they could put their horses in'. Hoping they were looking for farming machinery (used to be a working farm & is in a farming village) instead of horses & were startled when we were heading out in the car & prevented them from entering, so had to come up with an excuse quick!

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

If you can run to it, do both. Microchipping is not a visual deterrent, but done alongside freezemarking is ultimate proof the horse is who it says on the passport!

guys read the post they are already microchipped! Unfortunately as I discovered when mine went missing and was thankfully found they don't check microchip or use freezemark but then she was found and not suspected stolen but police refused to call out dog warden to scan all 4 that were found for a chip despite all of them being chipped!!

Freezemark as far as i'm aware can only be back or shoulder. If showing I would do under the saddle if possible as won't be seen until stripped, it shouldn't affect their placing if they are freezemarked as long as it looks like a freezemark and not a blemish ie they come out properly to look like numbers and letters! I personally would probably have vet to sedate but have never had mine freezemarked (they've come with them) so can't advise if you will need this but would imagine so with nervous youngster, however it can make them sharper so seek vets advise.

Coloureds can be marked anywhere there is a good chunk. Most horses are done on the left but my friend's horse was done on the right because of his markings.

With show horses, mark their backs where the saddles go. You can always put boot polish on for show days ;)

Neither of the horses on our yard were sedated - both munched on their hay. The farmkey lady was lovely, she was very calm with them.

Don't know about youngsters, sorry.

I'm stumped too atm. Dorey being grey would need to have a bald mark which I think is much uglier than a freezemark. But the farmkey lady was adament that microchips are the most useless inventions ever - she marked a horse with SEVEN microchips!!!!!

So yeah, I might get a micromark (tbh, the huge lump on the side of Dor's neck gives it away atm...) but I personally think freezmarks are the better ones. I'm just too vane.

(Oh, and with coloureds, they prefer not to brand white fur because the skin is pink. Dorey would have a black brand so wouldn't get sunburnt!)
