I have been considering whether to get my horse freezemarked or not he is a coloured and it would have to be on his shoulder. Do you think it puts people off stealing them as i had a near miss with him a few years ago when someone had attempted to steal him and i found him in a field further up the road all cut up,

I am also considering having this done. I am so scared of my girl being stolen. She is microchipped already. I have bought padlocks for the first of the two gates to the field with thick chains and luckily there are two big houses opposite but if its going to happen, these alone arent going to completely deter anyone.

Mine is also microchipped but you hear of these being removed etc they just don't look that brilliant and thats what i thought is it worth it cause if its gonna happen it will happen

We have a coloured gelding, and he is freezemarked on his side, sort of at the bottom corner of a saddle cloth area - its on a brown patch so it shows up. He has shown extremely successfully and it never has affected his results! We are getting our other two freezemarked next week!

get it done. far less horses are stolen with Freezemarks, and most are dumped or found very quickly. Two of mine were stolen recently, and quickly dumped. We are 99% certain because of their freezemarks.

I always ue Freezemark.biz, I personally much prefer this company.

I have been involved in the recovery of a number of stolen horses and a Freezemark ensures that the horse can be identified by anyone.

Freezemarking on the shoulder is best as it can be seen while the horse is being ridden.

Micro-chipping is not as effective as there are 7 different systems used and te scanner of one system will not detect the micro-chip of all the others.

I use Freezemark and pay the little bit extra to have a personalised mark. I think that makes the mark even more distinctive. Something that is memorable has got to be a problem with horse thieves. For example, a horse I know is marked ISIS in a square, that would get people's attention wouldn't it?

Does the process take long? Did your horse(s) play up? Is the lettering done individually or is it done in one go on a template? Do you think it would be best to have the horse sedated? Im worried because im in the middle of nowhere in a field with no stables - she is 17hh 3 year old! and there will be just me holding her!

I had my horse (coloured mare) freeze marked last week.
I'm in Cumbria and used a company called Northern Brand, no call out for people in Cumbria and no annual fee.
The lady that came was really nice and professional.
I don't think it hurt my horse as such, but it was probably uncomfortable, I gave her a bucket of feed and although she moved around a bit she never went to kick.
Mine is a personalised mark, each letter / number was done individually.
My horses mark is on her flank, I didn't want it under her saddle as I wanted it to show up and her brown patches on her shoulders weren't large enough to take the brand.
The brand has just started to scab over.

Supagran, good to hear the brand hasn't affected the showing results.

I had my boy done on Saturday. He stood still and I didn't need to sedate or bribe him with food!!

I booked him in for freezemarking after reading Little_Donkeys post a few weeks ago.

The mark has settled already and I think I will be ok to ride by Friday. I went with Farmkey and it cost £47.95 as 3 were being done at the same time. My boy is the proud owner of 00VE.
