due to a few hose theft scares in my area a group of us at our yard are getting our horses freezemarked.
I want my freezemark doing under the saddle area - how long will it be till my horse can be tacked up and ridden again?

It says it on their website, but I dont think its very long.

Well done for getting them done, great plan. xxxx

I think Farmkey and freezemark.biz answer this on their FAQ pages, but usually 5 days or so if it is healing properly.

I never have mine done under the saddle area, I know that in 99% of cases there will be no problem but I wouldn't ever want to be that 1% - and you can ride after 48 hours if they are done on the shoulder, and you get a deterrant that is visible even when the horse is tacked up.

Farmkey recommend 4-7 days off for marking under the saddle area, however each horse will react differently.
Farmkey also have a £10 off voucher on their website at the moment, and if you have 5 horses or more it's cheaper still!

thanks everyone - watcher now youve got me thinking again!!!
i really dont like freezemarks - sounds painful and dont look very pretty but i cannot let my horse be the only one on teh yard not done.
I dont even know who is doing it - another livery is organising it all but ill check she knows about discounts - im sure she said it was £46 per horse (more for a personalised mark)
I did get my boy microchipped last year but as you say - i dont think its a substitute for a good visual deterrent - i might just go for shoulder area.
Thanks everyone xxx

it's not supposed to hurt at all, I think the cold of the process stops the horse from feeling any pain, and it's just a bit uncomfortable.
Mason is also done on the shoulder as I wanted a visual deterrent even when he's being ridden.

ty - my instructor said the same re pain - another livery is having her horse sedated for it and i was going to get him sedated too - my instructor nearly burst out laughing ;) xxx

I've had a few done over the years (I'm ancient). It does not hurt and they vary how long they do it for depending on the skin type so less time for sensitive thin skinned horses. From what I remember it is about 5 days without riding.

Need the baby done soon, now shes over a year.

I would sedate her purely because I wouldnt want her moving and ending up with a permenant mark in the wrong place!!!

I don't normally bother with sedating, but Onyx was 18 months old and pretty feisty and after consulting with my vet we both agreed that it would be safer for everybody, and less unpleasant for him, if he was IV sedated

oh no now your all confusing me again lol - no i dont think i need to - hes 7 and my husband will come to help hold him - god i hate horse thieves making us have to do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

had my yearling gypys cob done by farmkey about a month ago, he was more concerned that he had to stand still, lol.

He didnt seem to be in pain and was happily out in his field within 5 mins

I had my 3 done last year.....now I have my own place I am so glad I did it....visual deterrent and all that.

Microchipping....I will have them done as well as, but not instead of freezemarking. When I asked people on the livery yard if they wanted to be done too, several said 'no thanks- he's microchipped'. Fair enough....but I didn't know that - a thief won't know either. Plus all the different companies are not linked together and scanning isn't routinely carried out ...even though it should be IMO.

Mine were all fine....one was done under the saddle area because he does a lot of showing, and we gave him a week off just to be on the safe side.

Microchipping is bugger all good until they are found. Obviously when they're found its REALLY useful, but until then, no point.

Anyone got a grey that they have had freezemarked? mine is microchipped but was wondering how a freezemark looks when it has gone right down to the skin!

I had a grey freezemarked 20 years ago, when freezemarking was quite a new thing. She had black skin under the marking site and she was bright white so her freezemark always stood out very clearly. You might need to do more local clipping on a pink skinned horse for it to show all the year round

My grey has been freeze marked and every now and then I need to clip the area as he is so hairy. its worth it though, I like having a visual deterent.
