freezemarking verses microchipping

ive got 2 happy hackers a grey and a dark bay.thinking of getting them freezemarked as its more visable than microchipping.do you prefer freezemarking or microchipping.we got a pate of horse thefts in our area so id rather have the freezemarking.
 
I was once told by someone from the travelling community that they prefer to have their horses chipped, as freezemarks can be "got around" in his words. He wouldn't tell me how though...
 
Freezemark every time. Joe Bloggs on the street can see it, someone needs to get up close with a scanner to find a microchip. Of course, it is now a legal requierment to have young horses and newly Passported horses microchipped.
 
There have been several instances of microchipps implanted in dogs "migrating" and going elsewhere in the body, i.e. one microchip had somehow ended up in the dog's elbow region!!

Also I believe - maybe it was on this forum?? - or maybe a horse mag, that sometimes infection can result at the site of the microchipping.

So personally I'd go for freezemarking every time. Its in your face, highly visible, and everyone knows its there.
 
If your car was stolen would the police be looking out for the reg plate that is visible to everyone or the chassis number that they have to open the bonnet to find?

Littleblackmule - Yes, in theory the freezemark could be altered with another iron but that is a lot of work and a major deterrant especially as there are hundreds of similar horses out there... for example in a field of twenty bay horses the one that is freezemark would be the last to be taken. The other negative would be that the horse would still have a freezemark and would stand out more even if the mark has changed and could be traced easier due to other identifying marks.

Microchips can migrate around the body although they are a good form of identification, they can also be cut out (easier to do than altering the freezemark!)

I would Freezemark everytime, and on the shoulder or bum so it can be seen under saddle.
 
I have just been thinking about this. I hate how freeze marks look but my horses are increasingly precious to me in my old age and although both are microchipped I am also considering freezemarking them.

Just out of interest (sorry for hijack) do their passports have to be updated when they're done?
 
Think my horse would have passed out if he was freeze marked...lol so i had chip and micro mark, it wasnt as that bad either.. :-)
Hes grey and the micro-mark is quite visible.

One girl once told me

I cant afford to get it done

and also he wont look nice with it on


i said can you afford to lose him???


he wont look nice if he is carved up and served up.




the result is ........... dah dah dah dahhhhhhhhhhhhh


she got it done

i want something visible regardless of it some people say dont like look , microchip cant be seen at a quick glance in a sale so Its FM every time

I wish someone had said that to me, I wouldnt be sitting here now wondering where my horse is.
 
I'll add it to my list of things I need to pay for then. I didn't know you could have personalised ones. That's cool :D

Freezemarking less successful on greys though

Not enough people have chip readers.
Even my local SSPCA officers do not have them nor my local Trading Srds.
Police have very few and they are not likely to be available at the right place at the right time ie when a suspicious lorry/trailer is pulled over

Every Policeman can read a freezemark
 
Second question, sorry guys, my grey is really quite dark at the moment. Would the freezemark people be happy to do her a white mark for now and I could have her redone when she greys out more. That way I won't have to keep clipping it in the winter for the mean time right?

Or would that just be a total waste of time and money?

Is it worth having them micromarked instead or is it really all about shoving a big number on them?

Do you think it's more of a deterrent on the shoulder or is under the saddle as good an option?

I've never really thought about any of this before :o

they only do bald ones on shoulders save rubbing under saddle
or you could have done on neck on mane side or other

Diamond was a dun when i bought her so it was done on her back as she turned 3 1/2 she started turning grey so farm key redid it on her shoulder i dont think i paid for it to be redone.. if he is likely to change colour i would say get it done on his shoulder now bald then you wont need to do it again.


make sure u keep it clipped on his shoulder than it is obvious on greys

yes you can have personalized on phone up before top check and u can pre book it

u need 1 number and letters



like Lilly u could have l1ly they are a little more to reserve them like number plates but its nice if u are going to get one to have one that means something
my livery is choosing one for her poss 5umr for summer or etc make a few choices before u ring that way if they said one is taken u have 2nd choice and so on.

ben could be ben 1 -2 -3 etc or b5nn and so on

Yeah, I want to have N1TS put on her (the grey one in my siggy). Is it mean to tatoo her with the word nits? :D She is called Nitty FWIW (well actually she is called swift but we all call her Nitty)

Brown horse on the other hand is proving a little more difficult to think of something for!

well if they dont have N1TS you could have NIT5 as in number 5 for s

or N1TY

not sure if u can i 5 digits

All mine have both, like someone said it has become just part of my horses to do list as soon as I get them. In fact only this morning my mare had her freezemark re-done as it just was not clear enough, her filly will be done as soon has she is old enough.
