I have organised a freeze marking session at my yard next week, just a quick question. Do they clip the area they are marking or is it just those in their winter woolies that are clipped?

My boy is fully clipped (is starting to grow through) and some of the other are TBs (fine haired types) and also some wooly monsters!!!! lol
 
They will routinely clip a square off every horse in the marking site, to ensure good contact with the irons, and also to deal with any potential bacteria in the marking area, as after they have clipped they will wipe the area over too. They usually bring their own cordless clippers
 
Yes, they will clip regardless of the coat, even clipped or summer coats.

Any other tips?

how long where your horses off for after the marking, do you think he will be ok to be lunged (no roller obviously) and free schooled to keep him ticking over
 
I have always had mine marked on the shoulder, I prefer the mark to by visible even when ridden - so mine have always been back in work after 2 days with no complications. Those marked in the saddle area will need a little longer before riding, especially if they are particularly sensitive, but you can still lunge, etc. And you can put rugs back on them immediately after marking too

ask them what the guarantee is...or if there is any compensation, if your horse is stolen and never returned, or stolen and slaughtered??...


i am sure you'll get get sweet fanny adams from them...

TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY.
 
Of course they can't guarantee your horse won't be stolen. It's a visual deterrent to put potential thieves from choosing your horse. I'd like to think that someone would prefer to target the unmarked horses before the marked because they are easier to offload.

Bit like burglars targeting a house that has no alarm over one that does. The more determined thief wouldn't be put off, but some will. It certainly lessens the risk in my mind.
 
JM7, that is you opinion, and of course you are entitled to it.

In my view you are wrong, and I will explain to you why I think so.
I spend part of my time working with Horsewatch tracking stolen horses, and occasionally recovering them. I can spend months following up leads, through numerous owners and sometimes end up with a horse that the original owner recognises as theirs that was stolen, that the vet agrees is the same animal by comparison with passports and photographs. Even that professional opinion is not enough to secure a conviction

The only way to prove that animal X is animal X is by unique identifiers; microchip, freezemark or DNA. Without that proof any prosecution is very much more difficult.

So to claim that making your animal identifiable is a waste of money is not only wrong, it is irresponsible too.

go to sales..NOBODY asks if the animal that is freezemarked comes with paperwork......

i wouldnt ever waste my money......

your average 1-3 horse owner "thinks" it may keep the wolves from the door...bu TBH thieves are selective...just remember that....


it doesnt matter to any theif what mark/brand etc anything has...everything is resalable..
 
im having it done so it is a visual deterrant, we have recently had a pony stolen from my boys field so would like to think that if they dd come back they would rather take something with no identifiable marks than one with.

Although my boy has lots of scars and could be identified that way (as well as by his microchip) i think it makes them less desirable to thieves, just my opinion though
 
Stats show that Freezemarked horses are less often stolen than those without Freezemarks and stats also show that a huge proportion of Freezemarked horses ( a high 90% +) are recovered, Anything to help with the recovery to start with has to be worth doing, a visible deterrent is a bonus.
 
just read the thread about the stolen arab mare, sold on with false papers. with a freezemark this wouldnt be possible.
the mare is very much like my arab, when i saw the photo i thought for a second it was a photo of my mare.
very difficult to identify horses without a unique feature.

all my horses are freezemarked. its a very good thing IMO
