Hi,
Im looking into getting my horse freezemarked and am currently researching the different companies and looking into freezemarking in general.

The obvious choice was Farmkey, how has everyone found their experience with them? How much did your freezemark cost?

I have also found a company named Northen Brand, are these any good, and would you choose a company like this over a company such as farmkey?
What other options are there?

Also he is white grey. How likley am I to have problems with the mark showing. Is there anyone with a grey marked who wouldnt mind showing me some pictures as Im interested to see what it would look like.

Did your horse need sedating, did your vet come out to sedate?

Thanks

Hey also very interested to find out more about freeze marking my appaloosa
I believe that freeze marking is relatively painless and they do not need sedating
i believe grey horses have to be 'bald freeze marked' the iron needs to be held on longer, this means that the mark will be slightly raised i think and no hair grows back in that placed as opposed to on dark horses the brands are held on for under 12 seconds and the hair grows back white
a grey horse has to have the mark on its shoulder i think because itwould be bald branded the skin would raise and to prevent rubbing from the saddle it goes on the shoulder, i may be wrong.
I dont think you would be penalised in the show ring but i may be very wrong
i also would be very interested in hearing folks view on this

greywelshie - the outcome of bald marking depends very much on the skin colour - underlying black skin gives a very good clear result, pink skin might need clipping around the freezemark to keep it legible.

You can enquire with Freezemark.biz too - their standard brand is 3 digits as opposed to the 4 digits Farmkey do - I don't know Northern Brand at all and would be concerned that if they are very small their admin backup and access to database out of hours if the horse was stolen or strayed might be a problem

I used Farmkey to have George done, the admin side was a bit iffy but we got there in the end! But the technician who came out to do it wasn't brilliant and very patient. George didn't need sedating, just a bucket of treats to keep him occuppied and after fidgeting for the first letter he stood quietly for the rest. I had him done under the saddle and was riding again in a week. He is chestnut, so can't help with the other part of your Q.

He has multi coloured skin lol, 3 pink legs and one black but black muzzle etc so i will have to have a good look at the shoulder area as i would want it there.
He barely has any coat, he is an arab and even his winter coat is barely there but clipping wouldnt be a problem

Thanks for that mother hen, i shall definatley freezemark out. Thats what worried me about northen brand the fact they are a smaller company and I havnt heard any experiences positive or negative.

millitiff thankyou for those links, i have had a read of both and was worried that peple thought that it caused pain in greys, i always thought it was painless and he is a sensitive soul at the best of times!

Personally have found Freezemark much better than farmkey, but they seem to be having problems getting out to people right now.

Freezemark are also cheaper.
A grey/white horse must be done on the shoulder and generally markings are good. here is a photo of my grey's Freezemark.

Pic of my grey's freezemark in my siggy. My other horse that I had freezemarked went ballistic and it had to be abandoned but that is apparently quite rare. It has put me off freezemarking my others though (who are microchipped) although I haven't ruled it out.
