I need opinions on this....I know that people say that a judge shouldn't mark you down for having a freezemarked horse but it does happen. I have M&M ponies so could have them marked under the mane but then surely it would not be a 'visual deterrent' to thieves.

What do you do/think?

Like everything in showing, it depends on the judge you have on the day. I have seen horses win classes with freezemarks, and I have seen horses bottom of the line with freezemarks. Whilst most judges no longer place you down because of them, others still might.

If you want to freezemark your horses, but are worried about the showring, you could always use horse make-up to cover up the freezemark in the ring?

My freezemark has never been commented on - it is under the saddle area.

Personally I would rather never win another rosette than risk my boy not being recovered or prevented from being stolen.

Most society rules state that freezemarks should not be a blemish.

Any judge that puts you down for a freezemark should be banned from judging every again in my opinion.

I dont know if it every society, but I know a few disaprove using make up on a horse, I know it happens, and I use it, but I think if you have a freezemark its better to let it show than attempt to cover it up. Like said before it should not be included at all in the judging process, if it is then the judge should be reported. Although proving that it was the reason your horse was dropped is another thing.

My mare is freezemarked and hasn't been out of the rossettes in hand for a long time.

She is grey and freezemarked on the shoulder, its pink and black so fairly obvious

i shouldn't think it would matter..

i show my Newfies with "Brands", and that is also a "blemish"... its never been mentioned by any judge i've come before in the ring..

Shettie is black and you're not allowed to use any kind of makeup in Shetland classes

my connemara is chocolate dun, he is freezemarked and we have never been placed down for it.

Carys you may not be supposed to use it but i can garentee people do use makeup.

Interesting idea using make-up to cover the mark for showing. Had never thought of that. Anyone actually done it successfully, so the mark really doesn't show? If so, what did you use?

I'm guess it would probably be worse if judge notices the freezemark was covered up with make-up, than if the mark was fully visible.

Couldn't agree more - and yes I do in hand showing and yes the pony has a freezemark on her shoulder - no judge has ever commented on it and I don't believe it has made any difference
