Can anyone out there answer a question for me? Is it possible to geld a stallion but retain the sperm from the testical’s to freeze? If anyone knows, do you also know who could do it (vet obviously!!) and if there are companies that can store the sperm, (not wanted in the freezer at home, potential for error bit too risky!)

I had a very random conversation about this and just dont know the answer!!

It is possible, however I'm not sure the sucess rates of frozen sperm. I'm sure any vet would do it for you, don't know where you are located so can't recomend any breeding specilists near you

Not sure how it would be stored but I'm sure you are not expected to keep it in your freezer

also not sure how long its shelf life is so to speak

I'm sure someone else will know more than I do!

Yes, this is fairly routine in the USA, I recently heard which means that the show horses are mostly geldings now, but their sperm is retained in case they turn out to be big winners in later years.

You would have to go to a specialist centre/use an experienced veterinary practice and presumably be charged for storage.

Frozen sperm is pretty successful, from what I understand, although not quite as good as the chilled, but still pretty high success rates. I think the success depends on who/where the technique is used, different practices have different success rates.

I heard a talk from a vet a few years ago now, in the early years of the technique, who was doing research on success rates of frozen sperm and the results were surprisingly good even in those days.
