Please may someone explain how the French equine database works -possibly with a link to a website/I can't seem to find one?

I am under the impression that they only use one PIO and have a separate ownership register. Is this correct?

Any help appreciated :)

I have two french horses so know a tiny bit but can't explain exactly how the two organisations interact.

There is a national database of horses here.

http://www.haras-nationaux.fr/utilitaires/moteurs-de-recherche/chevaux-et-poulains.html

There are also registered with SIRE.

http://en.france-sire.com/

I have a passport which is an identification document and contains details such as age, colour, microchip number breeding etc.

One had just come over from France so I was his first UK owner.
There was also a separate sheet (Carte d'immatriculation) with owner details. This is sent off to change ownership ( I kept the ID document). If you are in France this sheet it sent back and kept with the ID document.
If a horse is exported, when I sent it off to change ownership, S.I.R.E retained the sheet so I just have his passport however ownership can be checked online.

Thank you Criso, I found a reference for SIRE but couldn't find anything else about it so that helps :) Interesting to hear about the ownership details too.

If you want any help, PM me, I know my way around the French system.

Thanks, I will send you a PM :)

You could also PM Rollin, she knows plenty.

Thank you, will drop her a PM if I'm in need of more info.

If you did not send back the ownership document with new details, then as far as France is concerned the owner of the horse will still be the original french owner. This may or may not be a problem. It depends on what you do with the horse in the future and whether it ever goes back to France. When we sell horses/ponies from france to the Uk, we generally send in the certificate to SIRE on behalf of the new owner (they sign it and then post it back to us) and we also pay the small admin fee.

If you look at my post, I did send the the carte d'immatriculation and I am registered as the owner, I can go online and see I am the registered owner. I also had to include proof of purchase.

What I did not send was the identification document which looks like a passport. This does not contain ownership details but details of the horse.

ETA this was 5 1/2 years ago so don't know if the procedure is still the same.

I contacted SIRE at the time and they were very helpful in explaining what to do to transfer ownership.
