I currently have a french link snaffle, but i was reading somewhere they cause tongue pressure as where the jointed bit can cause a nutcracker action and hit the roof of the mouth.
I have just bought a new competition bridle for my horse so want to get another bit for it (can't be bothered to keep changing bit over) Which bit do i go for as my mare does mouth very well and i am now confused which would be the kinder bit for her.

Sorry if this seems a stupid question.

As far as I'm aware, it's the single jointed snaffles that cause nutcracker action - you can see this yourself if you just squeeze one together. With the french link, the 2 joints prevent the nutcracker action. You should be fine! Also, plenty of horses go happily in single jointed bits.

If you still want to get another bit, why not have a look at the JP range - they are slightly curved in shape to fit the mouth and the ones I have used have been really good. Or if you want to blow the budget, KK bits are supposed to be contoured to the mouth as well - my horse likes them!

IMO french link if he has a big tounge definitley.....single jointed snaffles are kind but only in a large mouth with plenty of room.......Good luck competing!

Single bits cause the nutcracker into the roof of the mouth action. French links stop this, but can cause pressure points on the tongue. I like the lozenge type of bits, no nutcracker or pressure points.
