Does clipping affect your horses temprement when being ridden?

I gave Baron a full clip on saturday. I took him SJ on sunday only for him to have a bucking fit and refusing to jump. He has never done this ever and I was really worried so I withdrew from my next class and took him home. As soon as I got home I tacked him up and tried to jump at home, he clearly didnt want to but I didnt push him far enough for him to go mad again incase there was something wrong. My horse can sometimes buck through exitement, but this seemed like he was very unhappy and not excited.

I put him back in his stable and he did a huge wee. Now that could have been the problem, although he did have a wee just before we left.

I have decided not to jump him for a week. He seemed fine doing flatwork on tuesday and yesterday.

Last year he had the same clip but we did not have transport then so I didnt do anything with him the following day.

Generally they tend to be a bit fresh the first time you ride them after clipping as they're feeling a bit colder than they usually would (obv!) so thats probably what it was i wouldn't worry too much!

That explains it then. At first I thought he was being bad, then I thought he was in pain and was feeling really guilty about telling him off. I will have to plan my next clip a bit better I think.

You can expect them to feel fresh, especially if you didn't have an exercise sheet on. Of course, if you've removed hair from under the saddle, that could also feel a bit different to them, again especially if it's a bit chilly & the muscles are tight.

I would see how he is over the coming days, using a sheet if appropriate (& treating the horse as if a little cold-backed may also help), but if you're still getting an unexpected reaction, then you'd need to investigate further.

He has been fine since although I have not jumped him again yet. I did not use an exercise sheet as it was quite a warm day. He was thoroughly warmed up before we went in. I checked him over myself, putting pressure on points of his back for and watching for any reaction and he was ok.

I am going to try jumping him laton sunday. If he is still not happy I will investigate further. Hopefully it will just be down to the clip.

ah you all beat me to it, was going to post asking if i can / should ride the same day as clipping? i cant think of the best / kinder option ie ride him before, thus getting him all sweaty and hot, or after, ie when he will be cold. Is there a problem with me riding him directly after the clipping if i put a exercise blanket on him? Also should I leave the saddle area unclipped for comfort / less chance of rubs / sores etc?
