Anyone know anything about the temperament of a fresian horse? Thinking of buying a one year old gelding and bringing it on with hopes for dressage and general riding.
far as i know they have lovely temprements! never owned one but a friend did and he was the sweetest boy! i keep lookin at them as would like one only prob is i dont like the price of the ones i've seen!!!
I've heard they are really lovely it is just their size (chunky and upright) that makes me think they could be fairly strong? Only ever owned tb's before that are flighty but not too strong.
friends boy wasnt strong was only ever rode in a snaffle! i thought he would have been a lot stronger than he was. was nice suprise that he was so responsive! she had him from young so that may have helped! have you thought about contactin fresian breeders for there opinions?? just look on internet and e-mail as many as you can so you can look at all responses and compare what different breeders have to say. think as you say they way they carry themselves they look harder to control than some other horses!
i have always liked them but my friend used to work on a yard full of them and found them to be quite arrogent and bargy(sp) but she puts it down to how they were raised in all honesty as apparently the owner didn't disaplin them so they got away with murder. Sounds quite dangerous with them being very powerful sorts
I wouldn't say there strong, powerful yes, flighty no, but still nothing like a solid ISH. Very honest but I dunno the one I ride i ride very quitely, leave his head well alone and ask him very politly.

.........if you get the boy can i have first refusal!!!!?
Worked with carriage horses briefly some years ago where we had two - I did their ridden schooling. Lovely horses, very well mannered, forward going and not all all strong given that carriage driving was their main job.
I loved them and they had beautiful movement.
