Does anyone know what the protocol is for riding in Friday Woods? We are looking for somewhere to box up to locally and have a good 2 hour ride. Thought this might be an option. Any info people have would be great.
Thanks :)

You can just park your box up and ride in there. It's quite a fun place to ride, but beware of the many rabbit holes on the open areas. :)

there is just the one car park - it's pretty large, you just turn to Layer by the Cherrytree pub (I think that's what it's called). If you are coming along Berechurch Road from Colchester with the correctional centre on your left the turn to Layer (triangle of green) is on your left. The pub is just beyond the left turn. If you get the postcode for Fridaywood Farm that will get you onto the correct road and the car park is along that road on the left. You will see the Friday Woods common and woods as you come up to the car park entrance. I don't think it is signposted as such, but quite obvious if you are looking :)

I just ride anywhere in there.

Strictly speaking you are meant to have a tag to ride in Friday Woods. I think this was to ensure anyone riding there had public liability insurance, but it was so long ago I can't really remember!

I have a tag, and don't think there was a charge for it - but I'm sure most people who ride there don't bother.

The pub you need to turn in next to off Berechurch Hall Road is called The Maypole.

I've just looked out all the paperwork for Friday Woods Riding Group and their website and email address are no longer in operation, so I am guessing it's no longer applicable! I have a map that I was given when I joined the Friday Woods Riding Group which is really useful, but bridleways are marked well and it's quite obvious which tracks are used by riders.

You can ride down to the bottom of the woods and in to the stream which is fab on a hot day! :)

sorry to jump on thread,i didnt realise you could still ride there,im also looking for somewhere to go how do you get there from wix direction?the last time i went was a hunter trial, shows how long ago that was lol

Hi Jack

Takes about 40 minutes from Wix. Do you have satnav? If you put in postcode for Fridaywood Farm (Bounstead Road, CO2 0DF) then drive past the farm (on your right) and the entrance to the Friday Woods car park is a little further down on the left.

Ahh, it's lovely riding. I used to keep my horses at a privately rented yard just down from the Cherry Tree pub, and the gate in my field opened straight out into Friday Woods. I do miss being able to jump on and head straight out into those woods!
