My friends daughter was out riding yesterday and got hit by a car as she was on a mini roundabout, the car knocked them both to the ground,

She was very lucky and got away without any serious injuries, But unfortnatly I can not say the same for the poor horse, she suffered a broken hind leg, and had to be put down at the roadside,

There were witneses and said it was the drivers fault (he has been done for it)
I got there just after it happened it was awful to see and waiting for the vet seemed to take forever.

She was an amazing horse won so much at showjumping and was a cross country machine RIP poor pony xxx

I am soooo anoyed as the drivers around that area are idiots and will rev their engines beep their horns and basically are so impatient its unbelieveable (saying that they are like this every where)

I just want to know has anybody run a campaign or something to create awareness of horses on roads and who to contact like council or BHS etc?

I want to do something so that this death is not in vain......

No advise, just wanted to acknowlede your post.

Poor, poor horse. RIP.
Hugs to your friend & daughter. How traumatic.
Glad justice have been done and the driver has been done for it.

xx

I am so sorry and hope that all concerned will be ok ((( hugs ))) and RIP little horse.

There is a forum member who has a website following the tragic loss of her horse, here in West Sussex .... I think it was something like 'killl your speed' ... I will have a look and post on here if I find anything.

RIP poor horse.
And (((((((hugs)))))) to you and your friend thank god she's not badly hurt.

   Hope the stupid driver gets all thats coming to him.

Sorry i'm not much help on any other front just wanted to say well done for wanting to do something positive out of this tragedy.

Poor horse, hope they weren't waiting too long for the vet. :(

Poor girl too, I can't imagine how awful that would be. :(

Maybe contact the BHS and ask them the best way to start a campaign in the area, especially as the guy has been charged?

How horrible. You should contact BHS of course, and everyone who cares at all, should join to support the safety work done by BHS (noone else does it!)

Also contact local press, TV, BHS county group, and defo contact councils to see if someone can stir up some publicity.

Good Luck

How horrific, my worst nightmare. Condolences to your friends.

As hard as it may be i would contact the local newspapers if your friends are willing. Ask them to hilight the accident to bring publicity to other car drivers and make them think.

thanks eaglestone, will have a look at website later,

and stencilface told the cops to go and get the vet as he was stuck in traffic so got to us pretty fast.

How horrific - i cant even imagine what she is going through -poor poor horse

A friend of a friend got knocked off his motor bike by a car today, hes on life support but they will switch it off. Apparently hes too far gone.

It puts into perpsective how short and fragile life is "memento mori"

:(:(:(:(:(:(

My thoughts are with this poor girl. :(

there happened to be a local press photographer passing at the time and was trying to take photos and the cops made him go, there was a small piece in the paper today and I will def speak to my friend to see if she is willing to actually speak to them officially.

Both stories are incredibly sad :(

My dad and I both cycle; I was flicking through one of his cycling magazines this week and someone had written a letter suggesting that cyclists, motor cycle riders and horse riders somehow get together to coordinate a campaign for safer roads. The author said, and I agree, that it's very difficult to get anyone to listen when it is *just* horse riders or *just* cyclists asking for motorists to slow down and drive more responsibly, however if all three groups were to work together, we might have a decent body with which to lobby (the Govt, I presume?). Worth a thought.

Thats a good idea, but what can we do to stop *blind* car drivers being blatently unaware of thier surroundings?

My Psych dissertation was titled "Driving blind" and was about the effects of change blindness on the motorist - the results were shocking

I am very sorry to hear about your friend and her poor horse.

A horse was killed locally last year in a very similar accident. The parents of the rider and several other people (including myself) contacted the local councillor who is the portfolio holder for highways at our district council. We all made a huge amount of noise about the indecent.

An awareness walk was also organised by the parents of the rider and something like 150 people walked the entire length of the road where the accident happened, we even made the front page of the local paper.

You need to make a lot of political noise with your local / ward councillors and if it is appropriate also involve the Parish or Community council for the area where the accident happened as they will have close contact with both the county / city council and the local Police.

Truly awfull so sorry for your friend and the poor pony , Im just not brave enough to ride my horses on the road...
It realy dosent seem worth the risk in these hurried days and the sat nav morons racing down every lane as a short cut.. Im not sure what can be done apart from wideing roads and making non car lanes, maybe every other user could get together??? however I dont think the cyclists should be invoved as a sizeable minority have scant regard for other road users and trafic laws ......

I am very sorry to hear about your friends pony, and the poor girl, it must have been very traumatic!! I ride on the road alot, even up through the town, and It's scary to think what can happen. A friend of mine owns a riding school, he believes that in today's world horses dont belong on the roads anymore. I dont agree though, why should we give up our right to ride on the road because of silly drivers!!! (Although I understand why he thinks so).
Maybe set up a facebook/bebo one of those pages as well as contacting the bhs.

Hope your friend's daughter is ok!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very sorry to hear of these tragic accidents.

Please report it to the BHS on the official form above.

Also once the police have taken action or decided not to take action the parents should be encouraged to take out a civil case against the driver as this will discourage him from driving in such a dangerous manner again.

What an awful waste of a life all because some driver cant drive properly. Hope the girl is ok, and recovers quickly and isnt put off riding.

RIP little horse.

My heart stopped when I saw the title of this thread last night, have only just been brave enough to read it. Please pass my condolances to the rider, I know first hand exactly how she is feeling. Please, tell her if shhe wants to talk to someone who has gone through the same thing, to pm me and maybe we can chat. My heart goes out to her, her family, and her horse. x

god how awful :( RIP poor pony
i've seen a horse hit by a car - again it had to be PTS but it was 2weeks later when the swelling went down enough for the vets to x-ray and see a broken pelvis :(
