She had it vetted , passed vetting but almost immediately became lame and turned out be be crazy !!!!!!

she has tried contacting seller to no avail , just ignoring her calls, letters etc .
she is in talks with trading standards etc , but is tearing her hair out !!!1doesnt know what to do any ideas ??????

she thinks horse must have been drugged to mask lameness , and doped to sedate it cos it is wild now!!

can bloods be tested now after this length of time ?????

how long would she need to have had tested to show up drugs/sedative/painkillers etc ???

we are really hoping the bloods will show something up and then she should have a good case to get horse returned and her money back !!!

she paid nearly £4000 for this horse !!!
it seemed to be the ideal horse for her , she has blown her savings on it !

i feel so bad for her, just shows vettings cant always be relied upon as there are some really terrible people in this world !

xx

Why is the horse lame?
Did she buy from a dealer [would be classed as a dealer if selling a few a year]
Was it her own vet who did the vetting?
Did they takesamples of blood at the vetting and has it been tested yet?

Did she have the horse Stage 5 vetted or just Stage 2? If Stage 5, the vet will offer to take bloods that will be stored for 6 months so that if a situation like your friend's arises, they can then test the stored blood for sedatives etc. What do you mean when you ask if bloods can be tested after this length of time? How long has your friend had the horse? If she's only had it a couple of weeks, then I understand her concern. But if she's had it more than 6 months already then she needs to ask herself honestly if her management/feeding/etc of the horse could account for some/all of the issues. I'm not trying to be brutal, just down to earth. For example, if the horse was used to being turned out regularly with company and now only has limited turnout on its own, then this will quite likely create a desperately unhappy horse.

Oh dear As box of frogs says if its a 5 stage vetting then bloods should ahve been taken. However there are many just as effective ways to temporarily calm a horse that won't show up on the bloods, and if the vendor is dishonest no doubt she will have done that instead.

Unfortunatly your friend should have returned the horse the moment it went lame. 2 months is quite a long time and unless she bought from a delaer she will have a job taking it back.

What a horrible situation

Thanks , yes from a dealer / breeder .
5 stage vetting ,
Horse was bought by my friend just 8 weeks ago .
she collected it and it was all fine, very quiet well behaved horse, took him home , turned him out in paddock alone for a bit ,he trotted round then ate some hay , then was stabled for the night as was his routine with dealer .

same routine for a week , then my friend hacked him out , he was very naughty , nappy , bucked and reared , turned him out , stabled him for the nite and the next day he was hopping lame .seems like painkillers /supplements/sedatives were out of his system by now.

Altho lame he has became very vicious , biting and snapping at everyone, crib biting , trying to kick . bargey when led , bolted off over the top of my friend .

Vet has now diagnosed Possible navicular in front feet , some kind of damage to shoulder ,suspensory ligament damage .
and has became a totally different horse, very grumpy and vicious ! and my friend has spoken to someone who used to know the horse previously, who says it was always lame when they knew it and is a grumpy , vicious toad !!but used to be a really good jumping horse ???!!!

vet is going to run blood sample tests asap , get to bottom of this .

my friend is distraught , she has been conned !!

xx

OMG! That's terrible. Sorry - didn't see the 2 months in the title. Poor horse - he probably is a miserable, angry toad if he's been in chronic pain with his feet. Did she have the horse with a guarantee at all, eg no money back but if proved unsuitable within a month, can be changed for something else? If she can get statements from people who knew the horse before, it would help her case but what a shame these people didn't speak out BEFORE she bought it rather than after.

Oh dear. Is she a BHS/BD etc member? They have a free legal helpline so give them a call. She should also send a letter recorded delivery/registered post (sorry never know which it is) to prove she has written to them and told them the problems with the horse and that she has asked to take the hose back (or maybe telling them she is returning the horse depending on what solicitor says).

I really feel for your friend - I am a student and got cheated out of £1050 recently which I really could not afford to lose. ALso over a horse. I will never get the money back though

Yes she needs to get the bloods checked ASAP.

With regards to the bad behaviour and grumpiness, has the horse's routine changed dramatically? EG was the horse always in a herd before and now in individual turnout, or alone?

If you get a positive diagnosis for what could be considered a 'long term, pre-existing condition' then you have a very good chance. Advanced navicular disease, for instance, would be one of these conditions. The problem is that it is going to cost you quite a bit to get the diagnosis... though the seller can be sued if it turns out that they did deliberately conceal problems. It may be an idea to consider making contact with a vet who has experience in legal matters who would be able to advise you best as to what to do next.

By the way, I've got something in the back of my mind saying that drugs can be detected in the mane/tail a long time after being doped... can anyone confirm this?

Yup, was also going to mention a hair sample as it’s basically a history of what the horse has been given or taken, well it works for humans.

"I am in a similar situation. Bought a horse, paid £200 plus for 5 stage vetting. Two months later he went lame. Paid a lot for lameness workup to find out he has proximal suspensory desmitis in both hind legs, which was found after a fairly strenuous flatwork lesson. No lameness up until that time evident. Insured horse a month prior to going lame. Just had blood samples tested (on request of insurance company - cost not covered by insurance of £200). Lab advises there was POSSIBLY a strong sedative in the system at time (no definite answer after £200). Insurance may not pay for treatment although the sedative is not necessarily a steroidal or non-steroidal - which is what the wanted to know the presence of. Treatment is going to cost approx £2k to give horse any chance of return to soundness. At 5 year old, he has no future as a riding horse if not done. To find out for definite existence of a sedative would cost £950 inc VAT!) Could pay the £950 to find out nothing there! Could pay £950 to find out it is there and then what? How successful would I be trying to return horse to seller and get my money back?

Why would you get a horse vetted without having bloods done? it costs £20-25 but you have peace of mind it is not drugged up.
3 vets I have spoken to with regards to vettings all say if you dont have bloods dont you might as well not get a vetting done, as high % the horse will be drugged.
Hope your friend gets something sorted.
