Hiya, im currently jumping her 1m ish. My friend has said that she is jumping hollow, and doesn't have good technique, so would be better suited for something else. Please could I have your opinions, and if there are any exercises for this to help?

Thank you!!

I'll put lots of pics up as i know its hard to see from one pic.

If these photos are representative then I suspect your friend is either jealous of the fun you look like you are having, or not as experienced as she makes out, or maybe you misunderstood her?

Not saying that your horse jumps like a world beater or anything, but you both seem to be having a lot of fun.

You could improve technique with some lessons on grid work, and as always it depends on what your aspirations are...

.... but the photos show a horse and rider coping admirably with some fences, so I would personally not be telling you that your horse is not suited to its current job!

Edited to say... unless your horse is VERY clumsy behind with SJ, and is not careful enough???

She looks a little flat in the third, fifth and seventh pic, but other than that I think she's got a nice little bascule on her!

Definitely doesn't look like anything to be overly concerned about; she's clearing everything with plenty of scope. Grids and bounces will be good for getting her to sit back on her hocks if you want to work on it, though.

The last picture is lovely - she looks in great condition.

Thank you,
She means to world to me and i wouldn't like to think she were going hollow. She's jumping open unaffiliated and won loads of championships so far :D I would like to affiliate her I think.

She's never touched a pole tbh! Only competed upto 95cm though

Is she more a "frenemy"???? Ha Ha.

TBH the one she looks best in is the bigger fence. Some horses don't try too much until they need to...maybe some lessons with grids, as I said, and see what she is like over something bigger once the grid has set her up nicely. That way you get to see what she is like in controlled circumstances, with a pro to help you.

But we will need photos!

I'm still figuring that one out!!

I only have a videos of her over bigger fences (scared to miss it and need to do it again haha).. and not sure how to get them on here? They are just at home & GG centre though. I would say myself that she is better over bigger fences too x

She is much more talented at dressage but i'd like to do everything on her tbh!

The only ones that look a little hollow are the ones where you aren't giving quite as much with your hands as the others but she doesn't look unhappy. I certainly wouldn't say that that she isn't suited to jumping! Weird comment to make

thank you. I am not the best rider in the world.. but getting there with lessons :)

Grids, grids, grids! Super horse/pony.....agree, that 3rd, and 5th fences are a tad flat, but they are XC and she is clearing them easily and safely. To work on technique, use high crosses and bounces; try not to pivot on your knee and release more....the more you give with your hand, the more, I suspect, she will take and therefore acquire better style. Also, wider parallels than that one in the last pic!

She looks a little flat in some of the pictures but honestly I would not be worrying at all , she looks like a lovely horse .
The horse does not look hollow in any of the shots .

Your friend hasn't a clue. She is maybe a small bit inverted over a couple of them but certainly not hollow and it doesn't look to be affecting her. My grade A jumped quite inverted all the time and subscribed to the theory that it was easier to just jump higher than use herself. She jumped 1.30-1.35s and it certainly never bothered her

She's hollowing in the third pic. But the rest of them she's making a nice enough shape.

Ignore what your friend is saying. Maybe the green eyed monster has something to do with it. ;)

If your concerned and want to do something about it, how about having a jump lesson with a trainer? grid work is fantastic at getting them to use themselves better (in some pics she's not really using her shoulders/neck as well as she could)

other than that she looks like a fab willing pony. Ignore your friend and go and have fun :)

So your horse is a rescue, you love her to bits, she has rarely ever touched a pole, won loads of championships unaff and you're planning to affiliate (and is even better at dressage) yet your 'friend' says she is not right for the job... = hilarious!

Keep the horse but get a new friend!

:D:D:D

I wouldn't worry at all the only pic that looks slightly hollow is the 3rd but it is probably the nature of the fence as well.

She clearly has some jump!! personally I really like her.

Keep having fun :)

What Lulup said! I'm sure we could all put up not quite perfect jump pictures but if she is enjoying it and you are enjoying up and she is sound, I think your friend is bonkers to have said that. Keep on with your lessons, we all need those, and ignore the 'friend'.

She has better technique than my horse who I'm competing BSJA up to 1m05 classes (1m15 in the jump off) - now he really does jump hollow. He subscribes to the school of thought that unless they are 1m25 or higher there is no point in tucking his legs up, he might as well just jump them higher and flatter. He looks like more of a steeplechaser than a SJer but we are having lots of fun and I'm definitely not going to find him another job!

Just a heads up - you're lacking any kind of ground line or it's on the wrong side in all the SJing pics which won't help with her judging the fence and having good technique.
