My friend bought a 14.2hh BSJA pony for her daughter 3 years ago as her daughter moaned that her current ride wasn't fast enough in the jump offs. So mum trundles off and finds a lovely mare that was jumping 1m, 1.10 tracks and is like poop off a shovel.
Trouble is mum wears rose tinted glasses when it comes to her daughters ability as her current ride is a steady, honest cob that daughter learnt to ride on.
But of course daughter rides new pony, falls in love and mum pays over 6k!!!
They go to a couple of shows and all is well but 3 months after purchase the pony starts to refuse, several bits are tried and gadgets until the inevitable happens and daughter falls off.
In-fact she falls off 3 times in one week and at this point daughter no longer likes pony.
The pony has it's back checked, teeth, several types of feed are tried but it's still very sharp.
My friend then brings in instructors to work on the pony's flat work because she goes around (as many showjumping pony's do) with it's head in the air but at this point (pony is 11) your trying to teach an old pony new tricks...This pony can jump, jump big and fast and what it's done all it's life so trying to make it go round on the bit, at a slow pace everywhere isn't working.
Daughter is now 15 into boys, music and going out and doesn't even want to ride her cob never mind a pony she is now too big for that she has no confidence in. Daughter hasn't jumped pony for 1 year and hasn't ridden her for 6 months and mum is relying on people on the yard to flat work her as daughter has no interest.
I've been saying sell her 6 months after buying her (when daughter didn't want to ride anymore after falls) but there was always an excuse like it's the wrong time of year, It will look bad if i sell her only after 6 months, the credit crunch means she won't get what she's worth etc, etc.
She's advertised her on Horsemart for one month and the 4 people who called her, she put off over the phone even before they came and looked at her. She's a lovely, sweet mare but is very sharp. A good little jockey and this pony could go to the top.
Truth is she doesn't want to sell her because she likes to tell people she has 2 horses and one of them is a JC pony. She was the type of mum that stood at the ringside and would moan/look down her nose at the others going round but at the first opportunity would go on about her pony etc...she was a glory mum!!!
So we are now coming up to another winter, pony is now 12/13, hasn't jumped for over a year, mum doesn't advertise her and if anyone does call then she puts them off, mum and daughter are continually falling out because daughter doesn't want to be at the yard as F'book, boys and Ipods are far more interesting.
Only reason they are keeping the cob is because the mum can ride him a couple of times a week.
Sorry for the long rant but this has been going on for years and it's so frustrating especially when mum moans she's skint and can't afford new wellies...well sell the pony that's costing you £150 a month in livery fees and you would have 5k lump sum cash in the bank!!!
Gggrrrrrrrrr

if she shows no more interest in horses, and has chosen facebook, boys and ipods over regular riding, then all i can say is... i think shes gonna gain alott'a weight pretty sharpish ;)
