My dh and I have got our friends little un's for the weekend and today we took them down to the yard to go riding. One was going to ride my girl and the other was going to ride my friends mare.

All was going totally normally and all of a sudden my friends mare reared in the corale, for no apparent reason, no one was grooming her at the time and luckily no one was too close to her. She calmed straight down again and we thought it must of been a fly/wasp/goodness knows what. I have never known her to do this before but as she was fine again thought it was just one of those things.

We carried on getting tacked up, my girl was all ready and my friends mare does not like her girth done up whilst she is tied up, so I did exactly what she does, took her outside the corale and let her walk in her circle and went to do the girth up (dh obviously had hold of the lead rope so she could not walk off) . As I went to do it up she reared, totally out of the blue but full height and as she got to the top she jumped back and totally flipped herself onto her back

BUT dh still had hold of the lead rope, he was trying to calm her down as she went up but when she flipped so took hubby totally off his feet and catapulted him into her (all 16 stone of him), as she went down she took him with her and she roll on him

the poor kids were screaming and the mare was struggling to get up but hubby was in the way, she managed to get up without luckily standing on him but she has cracked him in the face with her hoof. He has got a cracking bruise across his nose and red marks across it too from where she caught him. He has marks on his head and a couple of grazes on his hands but that is it, he was so damn lucky.

I didn't know which way to run, to the kids who were crying, my husband who was in total shock or to the horse. My husband amazingly told me to see to the kids and he would see to the mare

I checked the little uns and they were fine, and then went to check on them. Hubby was in a bit of shock I think, was totally dazed but amazing. The mare was got 3 superficial grazes and a sore croup. I obviously rang my friend straight away and she came straight down to the yard.

Thankfully she was fantastic and was more worried about my husband. I felt terrible and still have absolutley no idea what the hell happended or why it happened.

The kids.... they still wanted to go riding

but only on my mare!! so off we all went, hubby leading my girl and took them for a walk around the block, they had a great time and I think that it was probably good that hubby took my girl straight out as he was really shaken up, not surprisingly.

I am going to buy hubby a hat now, although he does not ride he still handles the horses and today's incident has proved to me that you should wear a hat at all times around horses.

Sorry for the waffle

Hope you have all had a good weekend

My god, he really was lucky. Thank goodness he was okay in the end.

On a separate note, that mare needs checking out thoroughly, there must be something badly wrong to get such extreme reactions as that.

Bet you and hubby will be having a stiff drink or two tonight! Tell him to take some arnica for the shock and bruising. You can give it to horses as well.

Poor man, and poor you and the kids, hope everyone is ok. I am sure he did the right thing going straight out with you all, but he must have been shaken. Good idea for him to wear a hat from now on. Hope it hasn't knocked his confidence too much. Makes you realise that you can never take a horse's temperament for granted.

Her owner is going to get the back lady out on Tuesday and the mare had her croup thoroughly Arnica'd straight away. Your right though, it was one amazingly strong reaction to something that is done to her everytime she is ridden, something totally normal, she does need a thorough check over but I think that her owner wants to wait until Tuesday and see how she is.

Hubby has been Arnica's too, with cream and tablets.....mind you I'm having probs getting the tablets down his neck, apparently they taste horrid!!! he's had a 16.2 horse on him today and he's moaning about the taste of a tiny tablet!!!

Thats very true, I have know this mare for 2 years and I have would never of suggested that our friends 11 year old ride her if I thought that she was in any way shape or form capable of anything as unpredictable as this.

Hubby is very shaken, he seems ok though, he says that his confidence is 'ok'. I'm not so sure I have to confess. It certainly scared to do-da out of us all

OM I glad everyone is alright! What a horrid incident I am glad everyone is in one piece even if abit bumped and bruised it could have been so much worse but luckily not. I think stick with your own horse in future that one doesn't sound right, lets hope the owner can find and sort whatever the cause is.
Take care x

That must have been terrifying!

The poor man!

Definitely a good idea to wear a hat but then how many of us do when handling a horse we think we know? There must be a serious problem to make it react like that

As for poor hubby I hope he hasn't broken anything and is soon on the mend. I have to say that to be honest I would of had him checked out. It is quite easy to break your cheek bone and it is a potentially serious injury. Please keep a close eye on him and get him checked out tomorrow if you are at all worried about him.

Hugs to you all.....what a terrifying experience

Thanks guys for all of your replies

I nipped off last night as hubby felt really tired and wanted to go to bed so I went with him to keep an eye on him! He did not sleep very well last night and has been up since 5am as he could not get comfy. He aches all over, the poor thing. He was so so lucky. He won't go to A&E and get checked over as he says he feels fine, just like he has been hit by a horse

!!

All joking aside though it was terrifying and I am really worried about my friends horse as the reaction was SO severe there must be something really wrong or really sore. I hope she manages to get to the bottom of it, I would be very worried if she was mine.

We have got to thank our lucky stars that it ended as it did, thankfully the girls did not have nightmares last night either

I'll keep you posted on how the mare is

That is horrible, I am just glad it didn't have a worse outcome!
He had such a lucky escape and I hope it doesn't crush his confidence too much.

Wow! What a horrid thing to happen. Your hubby must be very brave. He must`ve been terrified as a horse on the floor panics and throws their legs everywhere, he could`ve been really hurt, like you`ve said. It must`ve been worrying for you too. Hope he is ok, he might`ve done some damage, without knowing it, so it might be a good idea to get him checked out. I hope the horse is ok too.
