It’s exciting for us reading this but I imagine very stressful for those involved! Keeping everything crossed that everything is ok whichever way it goes x
And even vets can miss the obvious signs, I had one that had the foal less than 12 hours after a vet told me the swollen udder was fluid travelling up from the leg injury she had, I guessed she was due soon but didn't actually ask the vet if he though she was in foal because I knew in theory she definitely should not be and I didn't want to appear totally stupid, she had been nowhere near a stallion for years, what her owners found out later was one had jumped in with her, the owner took it home and said nothing.
So do not rely on anything other than a proper check.
What should the vet do? Ie what is a 'proper check'. Can they scan her? There is that other 'is mare in foal' thread which is not giving me much confidence in vets! Surely it can't be that hard to establish if there is a ruddy great foal about to be born in there?
They wouldn’t scan her. They would just do a rectal, if she is in foal it’s pretty bloody obvious, you can feel the foal from a manual.
If she is in foal and if what you are seeing is a change in the milk, then the foal could quite easily be born tonight.
Worth having a look at a few YouTube videos so you know what a normal presentation looks like. Don’t be too quick to interfere - mares can normally do it just fine themselves. See if you can dig out some iodine or similar.
Ver has been. No foal! Blimey what a roller coaster. That was my kids' biology home schooling sorted for the week. We all feel a bit deflated now! Even though she didn't want a foal!! For the best really
So the who done it was a no one done it. I am sure it is sad and glad at the same time. My mare's udder has filled a little over the weekend so it does happen a couple of years ago she also ran milk.
Make sure friend puts plenty of fly protection around udder as she does not want to get mastitis from the flies.
Abbey started producing milk. Panic phone call to vet who said leave in overnight (It was november) and he would come next day. Internal didn’t show anything but bloods were taken. Another couple of days of stress and no foal. Phew. She never stopped producing milk and the more you squeezed out the thicker it got.
