A good friend of mine has recently had a baby and it's becoming obvious that she just doesn't have time to do her mare justice. When she was pregnant, we did try to find a sharer but every numpty under the sun came out of the woodwork! Then, one of her friends wanted her on loan whilst her own horse was out of action, then abruptly gave her back when she got kicked off her yard (I posted about it)!
Sadly, the mare was quite difficult (bordering on dangerous) in her youth and many folk in our area have stupidly long memories! She's 11 now, homebred and has bred a foal herself. Her filly is now 4 and doing very, very well. Another friend has taken her under her wing as her horse had to retire early and she has a 2 year old that won't be ridden for another 2 years.
Having tried the options, my friend has come to the decision that she should sell her. Her son is going to be taking up a lot of her time for many years and she doesn't have a lot of family/network support to help free up riding time. So far, between us, we're managing twice per week and it's just not enough.
Now for the advice bit! My friend has always assumed her mare to be worth around 5k. She competes to a good riding club level in all discilpines, although her forte is jumping. However, she is 'quirky'! My thoughts would be around the 3k mark, does that sound about right in the current market? Also, she would want another horse, something more straight forward that wouldn't lose the plot if only ridden twice a week during the winter months. Do you think there could be people out there who have taken a current horse as far as they can and would want to swap for something with more scope to progress? If so, any ideas where to advertise/ find adverts for that time of arrangement?
As she has her own yard, it wouldn't be the end of the world if she kept her mare idle for a few years, but, he doesn't have room to take on a pick up/put down hacker. Any ideas welcome, thank you

Could your friend with the 2 year old not take her on for a couple of years until her's is ready to back? That would give your friend time to get into a routine with her son and be in a better position to give the mare the work she needs? Just a thought x

I think the swop/part ex idea is an excellent one as long as your friend is realistic given the current climate as to her mare's value. A reliable horse you can leave and pick up a couple of times a week for a safe and sane ride is also valuable indeed even if it's not competition material. So she may be looking for a 'straight' swop, but £5k seems a tad high for a quirky RC horse.

The friend with the 2 year old has taken on the mare's daughter, who's 4. The idea being, once my friend has got her son off the school, the daughter will come back to her (nicely schooled and with a bit of competition under her belt!).
I don't think 5k is realistic, hence my thinking of 3k. She is a talented mare, but, with the talent, comes the quirks!

3K sounds awfully high for a quirky 11yr old that has only done riding club. Her age will put more ambitious riders off, and depending on the level of schooling it may take them a while to get her going well. I recently turned down an 8yr old for that very reason.

And if she is quirky that will put the less ambitious off. In my opinion she would be worth more around 2K in this current market.
