Friesian Crosses?

Wouldn't touch anything with fresian in it with someone else's barge pole. Not my cup of tea at all, Far nicer breeds around.

My lad is Welsh D x Friesian (cob) .... He is highly intelligent, thinks he knows best, needs to be handled very carefully and can flick a switch to hot headed nutcase in 2 seconds flat, in fact Queen bees post describing Ebony, sums my lad down to a tee .... almost scarily  ....

However, when he gets it right, boy does he get it right, and he tries his heart out ... the bond we have is simply wonderful. That said, I would run and absolute country mile when horse buying in future, of anything Friesian or Welsh :D

He is a bit gorgeous though lol ... :

I have seen some frankly hideous looking freisan crosses online mostly in the US but I suppose thats the same with most horses it depends on the cross and the parents and they were quite erm odd combinations ie. freisans x QH. There was a stunning looking 3/4 freisan x Knabstrupper doing the rounds on FB a while back.

I think you definitely can get some hideous, but also pointless crosses with friesians (and with other breeds too). My personal dislike is a Friesian x welsh d.... I mean what is more pointless, they are both very similar anyway, why breed a cross from them. I think it's become more fashionable to own a F x and as such you can come across some right dross because of people trying to cash in on the 'friesian' thing. I certainly don't dislike the idea of a cb x although for me, I would always go for a much finer breed to cross it with

Edited to say, I wrote this while the above post was being written(sorry :( no personal offence meant). I just see so many similarities between welsh d's and friesians, there seems very little point to me in crossing them. Plus as I say for me, I would want something finer. If given the choice between a d x f or a purebred of either breed, I would go for the pure bred. That being said, your horse is very lovely.

think friesian crosses can be hit or miss, I wouldnt be the biggest fan, but we do have a homebred friesian x tb mare. The sire and dam complimented each other very well and I think we were lucky!

Hi Guys

I'm new to the forum but Friesians are my bag so I thought I would jump in on this thread.

There are Friesians and there are Friesians.

Unfortunately, due to their popularity they are being factory farmed in Holland with inbreeding rife.

Kept inside during the day to stop them 'bleaching out' in the sun.

Just be sure that you have the details of the Friesian part of your cross and make sure that the inbreeding isn't more than 5%.

Locking stifle and Sweet Itch are also common traits of the breed.

I think I may cry.... Wow, that makes me miss my girl even more!!!! How old is your mare? What do you do with her? She is lovely :)

Wow, I echo above. That is one lush horse!

So it seems Frieisians are a bit love/hate? I guess people like different things but the consensus is that they are nice people to be around which is the most important thing I think!

I dislike them although they make great team horses for carriage driving .
Their gene pool is small which is a big issue .
They used to be crossed with Arabs anyone got one of those ?
The crossed with the TB is the most successful and I have seen some lovely ones like the horse above but of course the results are variable
The best examples of every bred are of course lovely.

Don`t worry, no offense taken, and I couldn`t agree with you more, he`s a right royal pain in the arse, and I certainly wouldn`t breed one, nor buy one again, but I love him, and we have the lil something something that works for us. I`ve had him 4 years now, and wouldn`t be with out him, for all our frustrations, we just keep going lol

Very nice!

Thank you .... He`s the one I need help getting on if we`re out and about (from the other thread about us shorties, I think I need a rope ladder lol)

Thanks :) .... Yes, a bit marmite I think, I wouldn`t part with him, but i`ll never buy another lol

Def marmite. I thought I liked them, until I met a couple! My friend has two and we help each other with turn out / bring in.
Several people have said how intelligent they are...well not all of them. One of them is best described a 'ditsy'. She acts a bit like Alice in the vicar of Dibley.
Beautiful movement though!

I can't post a photo as it isn't my horse but my friend has a lovely mare that is a Friesian cross, maybe with a warmblood.
