..... or maybe not. I have my friends Friesian filly at the mo, Ive backed her and am about to start hacking her out. I was wondering if its a breed 'thing' or if she is unusual in that she only has 2 chestnuts (fores.) Answers on a postcard......:)

thanks Friesian76 :) Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to get used to his/her trot? Im finding it very uncomfortable and hate having 'no neck' in front of me. So far she has been very easy to work with and remembers everything :) Are they all like her or have I found a saint of a 3 and a half year old?

Hes got a lovely trot really easy to sit to. He's is a bugger though sometimes. He's cross TB and totally different to most friesians. When you read about the breed they are supposed to be amenable to everyone but mine is a mummy's boy, he pulls lots of faces at everyone else. I love him though, they are quite an intelligent breed and learn fast.

I have a friesian X who has a lovely canter, okish walk, but the most god-awful trot :o Nobody will ever get used to that ;) Nor will anybody believe me when I tell them just how bouncy it is, as they ask for trot and without fail, they will nearly be bounced right out of the saddle

But he's a X, the only purebred I've sat on had a pretty nice trot, albeit a little different :p Got used to it relatively quickly :D

Re: chestnuts, said purebred has 4, but the hinds are remarkably tiny. About the size of a pea :p

I've got a friesian mare and she can do stonking 'friesian big trot' it did take some getting used to but now I don't have a problem with it - I actually find sitting trot quite comfy now :)

I don't get what you mean by the 'no neck' thing? Once of the things I love about riding my girl is that her neck is there - never any danger of tipping off the front :D

I've ridden a few reaaaaly nice friesians, from a driving yard where they did weddings/funerals etc... I found their trots really easy to ride, (on most) it was the big canter that I found difficult to sit to!

There is also a fresian on my yard - but it rides (and looks) more like an uneducated fat cob! :D

The friesian on my yard has 4 chestnuts...

Is it bad I dont know the answer to this question? I have had my boy for nearly 4 years. I am sure he only has them on his fores. I will get back to you 2moro about that though.

The big trot hasnt changed, I am just more used to it now. Agree that its the canter thats the issue. Big and bouncy doesnt come close!!

Oh I know what you mean about the canter - very erm uphill, my girlie was terrible at first but once she settled down the canter got smoother and smoother.

I just find my girl a pleasure to ride, she has her moments but she's always been very willing. I'm just hoping her daughter is as easy when I start backing her next year.
