I have been riding for as long as i can remember and am i pretty advanced rider. But recently at work i have been riding the more 'Skittish' horses. A 3 year old colt that i hack out and a wise old horse that bombs off every two seconds. My problem is that i am so frightened! Every flick of its head i tense up and send signals to the horse which makes it ten times worse! I really need to start relaxing as the colt isn't doing any thing really wrong and i am sending him bad vibes. If any one can give me advise on how to get over my irrational fear would be much appreciated! I need to get this sorted and get on with my horsey career path, Thank you!

I would suggest taking some of the pressure off yourself - go out on some nice relaxed rides on a safe (even ploddy!) horse with some nice people. This might help you settle your nerves and remind you that you're meant to be having fun (this is from someone who has been there);)

Also, Rescue Remedy can be a godsend!

Been there. Singing helped me keep my breathing and my nerves under control. It was probably tuneless and the same three words would come out of my mouth but it stopped me holding my breath.

Looking after yourself so as to be in top physical and mental condition can help as you will feel less vulnerable. Eat well, get enough sleep. Avoid stress if possible in other areas of your life so you feel mentally strong as well. When you think about riding these horses, you may need to "psyche" yourself up. Remind yourself that you know how to cope with what they may throw at you. You are experienced, you have the right reflexes. You are actually going to improve them by using your skills and devising the necessary strategies. Good luck, you can do it!

You need to think about something different for a change... go on holiday, have a week off, try boules or mountain biking or golf. Doesn't matter. As long as it is boring.

In no time at all you will be thinking "goodness me! get me back on a horse anyday!!!"

Annnnnd problem solved :D

Sounds like you're going to muck that young colt up!! I'd find someone else to ride him until you get your head sorted!!

No need to be rude, was just wondering how AD"s make you "fat and ugly"!?!

Errrr you were rude to me! I was having a laugh whilst making a very sensible remark about not taking drugs. Don't be so defensive - it wasn't aimed at you!

Have a good yawn when on board. It will help to relax you AND the horse. Also consciously relax your body position

Now then, lets all calm down and have a cup of tea..... loose or bagged??? One lump or two?? :)

It is not an irrational fear. The threat is very real, you really could get seriously hurt and your brain is trying to save your body. Take the pressure off yourself and don't ride these type of horses. If you have to ride them do it in a controlled environment like a school until you feel safer to take them out.

Tea's up!!!

Sorry OP, didn't mean to have a tea break right in middle of your crisis.

Something must be affecting you and these sensitive horses are just picking it up like any horse would. I agree with everyone who says take a break or ride some calmer horses for a bit. Ask yourself what is making you so nervous and anxious. Then, take yourself away from it or tackle it head on.
