An early start for Brigstock + a broken down lorry on the A14 (not ours) which caused a looong tail-back = a surprisingly enjoyable day!

Think we arrived about 9 and the usual routine, R sent her minions (me and her Mum) off to collect numbers/part with money etc while she walked the course which was apparently just right (BE100) for Bolly and a couple of 'um er shall I do the alternatives' (Nov) for Frodo. In particular she was worried about a big hedge with a ditch under it, some log things, the water and well, quite a few of them I think.

No time to worry about it too much as it was time to warm up for Bolly's stressage which he did nicely enough and scored 33. More or less straight up to the SJ which we thought was a bit kinder than Nurstead and he did a steady clear and then on to the fun bit. We were a bit worried after the 20 pens they got at Nurstead for tangling with the new circling at black flag routes rules - at least we think that's what happened. We shouldn't have been though as they flew round without a care in the world and reappeared at the finish surprisingly soon after the horse that went before them and while the one who followed was at fence 6! Too fast TFs we thought but we were wrong - just - one second faster and ......

Frodo's turn and he was being very lazy and subdued in the DR warm up but as R's Mum pointed out, he had been stomping around on the lorry all the time Bolly was out and about and he was probably knackered. Rosie didn't take my advice to take him over to watch the XC start to wake him up - can't think why - and instead wore herself out trying to make him make him put a bit more effort into it. They did a better test than at Nurstead apparently although his relative lack of experience was evident and he scored exactly the same, 34.3, which was well down in the bottom third. A vid of some of it here.

She officially had a 1hr+ gap until her SJ, but on the strength of the lowly test score she decided to see if she could do the next 2 bits early (so she could get home in good time to go out partying with her mates ;)). Again the course looked quite kind compared to last time, he was still being a bit dozey but he managed a clear with a few sharp intakes of breath from her Mum and Dad. Video here. While we were walking back to the lorry they announced the BE100 final places and good old Bolly had come 4th so big :D:D:) all round.

Off to the XC warm-up, a couple of practice jumps and at last he woke up. I filmed the bits I could see from my vantage point up on the mound with the castle thing on top. He looked to be going really well at the beginning and finished full of running having done all the direct routes. Video (mostly galloping through the trees). He was washed, patted a lot, walked and ate (including trying to nick the remains of our picnic) and back on the lorry. We went to collect Bolly's frilly (and a cheque :)) and to have a look at the scoreboard. There were hardly any full results up - not surprising as R had been only the fourth one on the Novice course but hers was and we could see that he'd finished 2 seconds inside the time :). No chance of a frilly though so we headed for home, getting back to the yard approximately 13 hours after we'd left that morning. A long day but thoroughly satisfying and Frodo has his first proper BE point just one day after his 6th birthday :D:D:). Oh, and he finished up 13th so I'm a very happy owner - thank you Rosie xx.

The ground was excellent and, as an owner (albeit an unofficial one as I'd rather give the registration fee to Rosie for more training lessons) I'm just off to fill in my feedback form on the ERA site. Thank you for reading the above waffle if you have :)

how lovely - what a great day for rosie! :) unfortunately my mare didn't get to do the jumping as they didn't think she was 100% right after the dressage - still lovely to see vids of what it was like though :)

Well done Bolly and Frodo and Rosie of course!:D

I love Frodo's tail in the dressage, I always think of it as his 'happy tail' :)

Well done for filling the feedback form in, the more the merrier!

Wow.

If he jumps that easily and effortlessly as a 6yo he will be fantastic once he's 8/9.
You have a future superstar under your ownership there!

What a fantastic weekend! Both Frodo and Bolly are growing up so fast and gaining some fab results! Rosie must be thrilled with them both :D and wonderful for you as an owner to watch Frodo progressing through the grades so confidently :)

Booboos - thank you. It was good to go home with that nice warm comfortable feeling that things had gone our way :)

Thank you Nickirhia. Frodo's tail is very expressive and he is usually a very happy person. It's very easy, the feedback form, so I hope everyone on here has joined ERA and is doing their bit to help the hard working event organisers.

caterpillar - Think we've got to take our time and make sure he stays confident but we're hopeful he'll carry on up the levels.

Hattikins - thank you. They're both very good boys when they're competing but I wish they wouldn't be such bad boys on the lorry. Bolly's learning to be an idiot from Frodo, he was angelic when they first got him :( It's surprising how much fun it is to be an owner. Incidentally, I heard your mare's name mentioned yesterday but didn't see her. Hope she's gone well today and it sounds as though Jack was a good boy too so not a bad weekend for you either :).

Thank you alwaysbroke - we're all very pleased for you too - but you know that x

Thank you bb - it's exciting that he seems to be coping so well at least at the moment. He just loves the XC.

Thank you only_me. He is quite lovable - even when he's being naughty :)

Clever Frodo and clever Bolly! (and clever Rosie of course ;)). Frodo must be such a rewarding and exciting horse to own. I'm really excited for the whole team. Where next?

Excellent! Very well done on his first "proper" point!
As to stressage I think we are all bemused by results from time to time!! Just have to hope that sometimes it works in our favour and we are bemused by an over generous mark!!

Thank you Gb. It's fun owning a horse anyway but even better when he's so obviously enjoying eventing. We always hoped he'd be brave enough and it seems he is - at this level anyway :).

Chloe - cheeky describes him perfectly but he can also be very irritating. Typical teenager, at the moment it's trying to trash the lorry and/or reach over the partition to annoy Bolly. I dare say it's just a phase though <sigh>

DHB, thank you :) Dressage is something I don't really understand so I've just got used to being surprised. For example, when R's Mum said that the test was better than his previous one, I said 'so the score will be worse'. The surprise this time was that it was actually the same!

Sorry I'm late, Rosiefan. Frodo just looks permanently jolly, maybe he's trying to make Bolly jolly in the lorry too. ;) Very well done on the grown-up point, I'm sure there'll be many more to come. :D

Fab report, just got round to watching the vids etc :) Frodo looks like he is going to be a very athletic young man when he's strengthened up, and makes nothing of those fences :D Lovely to see him progressing so confidently!

Baydale - No need for apologies - I see you've been busy with talking, reversible handbags ;). I think you may be right about jollying Bolly and he does seem to up for a laugh. It's us people who get fed-up with him - both of them for that matter (apologies to meardsall millie who was apparently parked next to us on Friday - they make one hell of a racket between them :()

Thank you SC and Star - it was a long day but 2 good sleeps later it's all forgotten and yes, the point is very welcome. He missed out when he was 7th at Great Witchingham because there weren't enough starters in his section.

Kat B - thank you. The fact that he and Rosie seem to enjoy it and inspire confidence in each other is my favourite thing about the whole being an owner business.

Thank you kirstyhen :)
