Day 2 at Gt Witch for Rosie and her Mum with Frodo starting at 1pm. I left home early to join them as it’s quite a way from me and arrived to find both horses in their stables, Bertie with a haynet, Frodo without but plaited and polished. He’d acquired a good covering of shavings though and some time was spent picking them out of his plaits and tail and brushing him down.

It was his first time with studs and he was in big disgrace for scraping the side of the lorry with his teeth while Rosie was putting them in. I guess they felt strange as he tripped a bit at first and his test was quite wobbly, not as good as at Stratford Hills - actually did a few steps of canter down the centre line when he entered and jogged/tripped in the walk phases. It was also in a long arena which may have been a factor but Rosie said it was her fault as she rode him so badly! She and Mum guessed 40+ so we were very happy with 35.5.

I’ve been teasing R about him always having one down SJ and I reckon it annoyed her enough to make her even more determined than usual - so they went clear. Result ;)

Time to get togged up for the XC and - novel idea suggested by a friend who always does it with horses who don’t like getting their feet wet - boots dunked in a bucket of water before they were put on + a liberal dousing of all 4 legs with a sopping wet sponge just before they went over to the start. Not sure if it was down to that but something worked because he went through the water without too much encouragement and they zoomed home with just 3.6 time. Frodo’s first DC :) big hugs and pats and lots of polos after his bath.

We went to look at the scores but there weren’t many up so we watched the SJ for a bit and sat around in the sun before going to have another look. Although all the dressage scores were filled in, only half of the SJ and about 5 XC were up (including hers) and while it was possible to see they couldn’t win we simply couldn’t tell whether she was in for a placing or not so we decided to call it a day and start the long trek home.

Some vid - a bit of stressage and XC and then the SJ.

Thrilled to bits to look at the results this morning and find out they ended up 5th and apologies to the organisers and sponsors for not being there to pick up the rosette but it was such a long way home :(

Thanks for reading if you have and a few gratuitous photos I took. We bought 4 from the official tog but weren’t able to ask permission to post as he was still out on the course working.

Well done! I was fence judging out on the xc course and I have to say it was lovely to watch so many well ridden horses out on course.

That's good to hear EllieK and thank you TM - he should be able to jump seeing as his sire is Unbelievable Darco but these things don't always work out!

Congrats to Rosie, I kept hearing her name on the loudspeaker, and saw the last bit of her XC round, he looked very confident. :)
I'm also pretty sure I was standing near you at the dressage (was hanging round there for ages as my friend got on to warm up way too early!) in a red hoody, but was too shy to say hi in case it wasn't you :o :o Saw her test and thought they both looked great, very well ridden :)
I was also wandering round on a bay with a pink nose for most of the day, lol.

I so know what you mean about not saying hi in case you've got it wrong and the person thinks you're a nutter - I've done it too in the past. I think he is quite confident now but still very green - apparently R's Mum was talking to someone with an Unbelievable Darco youngster and they said they're quite slow to mature so there's lots to be hopeful about :)

Thank you everyone. I won't forget that Calvert Cup outing in a hurry M - talk about heart in mouth, think I held my breath from the start to the finish of the XC round and nearly passed out when they said she'd come off/got back on in the XC

I've emailed the tog and now have his permission to post the pro pics we bought (thank you Trevor http://www.theimagefile.com/web/trevorallen/) so here they are.

One of Frodo

2 of Bertie

(R wanted this one because he took such a flyer it made her laugh)
