Hi...I am hoping someone may be able to help me figure out what is wrong with my horses feet. I have recently noticed that the back of their frogs near the bulbs of their feet have been "eroding" and they are soft and squishy (it looks like a hard circle left with the squishy bit in the middle). I have been using an antibacterial spray on them as thought it could be a type of bacterial foot rot. Has anyone else had this issue and what is it?

Does it smell? Could it be thrush. If yes I find flushing in Hydrogen Peroxide helps done daily and keeping as dry as possible/allowing to dry out whilst stood in each day. Also as a daily application to my horses feet as he is very prone to foot rot I use antibac hoof dressing down all the nail holes, round the shoe and frog and that helps keep it at bay!
 
This is probably thrush, especially if the frog is soft and white and smelly. You can get a blue spray from your farrier or a tack shop (sorry can't remember the name) which is a bit expensive but very good. Or you can spray them with iodine, messier but easier to get hold of and cheaper. And don't panic if you should see maggots ( wish i could put in a shocked smiley here but dont know how)- you dont really want it to get this far but if it does the maggots are there because they are eating the naff bits, so console yourself with the fact that they are helping!
 
Hi...thank you for your replies. It doesn't really smell....one of mine had thrush before and it stank and this doesn't smell like that. One of the other horses on the yard has it as well but hers is much worse and it looks red and sore....could this still be thrush?
 
Can't comment it it is still thrush but I would try HP, it will kill any bacteria present that could be causing this. I can't see what else it could be that would cause it to 'rot away'

Are your horses stabled, If not I would be bringing in off the mud and the wet for a few days, limiting the turnout to give it a chance to dry and heal. If you are bedding down already and are deep littering, perhaps use 'clean bedding whilst you get to the bottom of the matter.
 
Sounds like deep sulcus thrush, my horses feet didn't smell at all either and he had it really bad, google pete's goo, nt-dry(good stuff) and red horse products are really good to help clear it up
