Poor bloody dog!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree. Bloody ridiculous - people who can't walk their dogs for long enough shouldn't have them. I hate it when folk won't take responsibility... if they had a child, they wouldn't say 'feeding my child three meals a day is neither practical nor realistic'... or maybe they would. Argh! I know that's not a good example but am feeling very grrr today!

tongue.gif

It's like watching Ceasar Milan programmes, when idiots say 'oh, we walk our beagle once a week around the block, we don't understand why it is trying to kill us and our children, and tearing the house apart.'

Couldn't agree more EllaP. I know so many dogs whose only exercise is the occasional trot around our local recreation ground - for five minutes - on the lead!! The owners just can't believe that my Lab gets 2 hours off lead walking every day, without fail, in all weathers! As you say, some people just don't understand the responsibility - so sad for the poor dogs...

just had a peek and spotted that........don't get a bloody dog if it's not practical to look after it properly then eh! Get a cat

And the crap excuse about not walking the one dog FOR A YEAR
mad.gif
as the other was lame makes me wanna go to canada and give her a slap!! Indie who's pretty much on her last legs has just been to the country park for an hour and a half. We walked round like a couple of old hens stopping for breaks and to have a sniff (that was her not me) while the others hooned around and wore themselves out.

This New Rider forum could be an endless source of entertainment

Quite right - my parents have just lost both their old boys within a few weeks of each other (both 15, both huge, one arthritic and the other a cancer surviving epileptic!), but right up until the end the boys went out for their walks, albeit slowly and sometimes taking short cuts across fields. The rottie even still wanted to chase his toys! They loved it, and I reckon had great quality of life for their age.
smile.gif

What quality of life do these never walked, over fed, badly trained (mines no angel but still...), indulged creatures owned by numpties have?!
mad.gif

When my oldie was coming to the end of her days last year
frown.gif
she couldn't walk far at all. So I used to take the others for their normal walk and then take the old girl for a gentle stroll a couple of hundred yards up the road and back, just so that she felt she had been a proper walk. The rest of the time she just pottered round the fields. Can just imagine trying to live with the other 2 if they hadn't had their walks
tongue.gif
I am trying to get up courage to go on the fluffy forum, wonder how long it will take me to upset someone!

Got to say that this thread has really disapointed me
frown.gif
I know it was meant in a jokey manner, but I thought AAD was big enough not to jump onto the HHO bandwagon of 'lets all slag off NewRiders forum'
confused.gif

People look after their dogs in different ways, and just because we dont agree with them doesnt instantly mean that those indviduals are dreadful terrible people whose dogs have an appalling life? I certainly dont walk my dogs for 45 mins every day - but that is because I chose to have greyhounds, which need 30 mins twice a day, so then they sleep for the rest of the day
grin.gif

Sorry, cos I like everyone who has contributed to the thread etc, but I just feel that it really comes across as 'holier than thou' to any outsider reading it, and thats what gives other sections of HHO a bad name
frown.gif

But then probably I am just being over sensitive today
crazy.gif

Hi Splotchy - I certainly didn't intend my comments to be taken as directed at the NR forum users specifically. I would have made exactly the same remarks in regard to anyone! I do agree that it is unncecesary to have a go at the users of any forum in particular but I think most people expressing an opinion on this thread were commenting more generally (happy to be corrected by anyone who wasn't!!)

Well you're right, it was meant in a jokey way. I did also post on the original thread with what I hope was helpful advice, and I guess I should not have said where it was I saw this (or indeed have posted at all).

I truly feel that welfare is compromised by what is advised on some of those threads, and feel strongly about it.... however I will not be visiting that forum again because frankly there's very little I can do about it and I don't have the energy. I tend to come online for some light relief from an extremely demanding and draining job so won't be going on any site that raises my blood pressure so high.

I know exactly where you are coming from hanandhen, but then I read plenty on HHO which makes me cringe (not necessarily about dogs, but also about horses and in Soapbox)

I also remember that last time I was waiting in the vets for my appt, I saw a very elderly (I am guessing) labrador-type mongrel come in which was so unsound behind that it didnt walk on its paws, it put the back leg from the hock down onto the floor to walk
crazy.gif
crazy.gif

And I sat for 15 mins listening to a vet nurse telling a woman about every aspect of looking after a pregnant bitch, how to whelp her, and how to look after the puppies - the woman didnt have a clue
crazy.gif
crazy.gif

But the vets didnt say a thing to either owner
confused.gif
So should they have intervened in the interests of welfare?

I guess I am just tired and over sensitive to stuff tonight, I'll get me coat

crazy.gif

But Splotchy you have just said you walk your dogs 30 mins twice a day, so that is a lot more than nearly every day
tongue.gif
I think the comments were meant originally in a light hearted way but it is quite difficult when you see people making daft statements.
Lets face it plenty of people make ignorant statements on AAD, and we all usually try and put them right, and certainly Hanandhens post on NR was very helpful, so though I do see your point I don't think people were being really nasty.
Re the dogs you saw at the vets, possibly the vet had tried to offer advice re the old dog, they can't force people to take it, and at least the nurse was trying to help the woman with the in whelp bitch, not much else she could do really when the bitch had already been mated
frown.gif

So put your coat away, and stay, you know we are all lovely really

It's just so easy to get wound up about this type of thing isn't it - and then sound as you say holier than thou. My remarks are definately not directed as such, more general rage (I seem to have a lot of that today

)

Have read back my post about the older dogs, and that situation is certainly not the same in every case, just the way it went for my folks dogs, so apologies if it offended anyone.

Yeah what's up ?

You are right that sometimes we do get all holier than thou about our dogs and not everyone looks after their dogs in the same way but I think people were also commenting on the girl who walked her dog once in a year and to me that's just not right. Man took away a dogs right to be free and roam so we at least owe them a walk a day!

Of course I agree about the one walk a year thing, that is obv not right, but I personally dont think a dog will suffer if it doesnt get a walk every day of the week

Sorry if I bothered you Splotch, I suppose I am a bit judgemental, but I come across so many dog numpties in everyday life, it is hard not to blow off at them online, too.
I suppose, like here, it is hard to gauge the situation just reading it off a computer screen.

That sucks Splotchy.... don't suppose you want to emote to an online random but you know where I am if you want to PM. Am always willing to offer a listening ear to rants etc if needed.

Sorry you're feeling a bit low and fed up Splotchy. It is very easy to let these posts get to you isn't it? I agree that it isn't just the HR forum though - we've all seen posts on this forum, and probably others, which are just as upsetting for those of us who really care about animal welfare. You're in good company!!

Hope you feel better today?

I'm laughing at someone referring to a 'check chain' (being PC here

) as a choker chain
grin.gif

Maybe they're from Sweden?
4.gif

Quick "dictionary", English - Swedish name of the dog collars direct translated to English :

Flat collar = Collar

Slip collar/Check chain = Choke collar/chain or Whole choke

Martingale collar = Half choke

Prong collar = Thorn collar or Prong collar (illegal in Sweden).

About the daily walk, hm, I have a confession. Since I'm still spending my time in the summer home (internet connection from there are still not good, so I'm writing this while I'm home doing laundry anyway), if the girls are out running around in a large fenced in garden and at least the two younger ones runs and plays to the point where they sort of need to crawl back up the stair to get back indoors, I admittedly does count that as one walk.
e050.gif

On other hand, they maybe get five, ten or so such "walks" and one or two regular walks in the forest per day.

By the way, does those dogs that is not allowed daily walks wear nappies indoors then? Since I doubt they do wear nappies, isn't it a little more inconvenient to clean up the mess indoors x times per day, than taking them out for a walk? Personally, since I allow myself to use our toilet more than once a day, I presume my dogs needs to go out more than once a day.

No wonder some of their dogs are nutty, what are they suppose to do to stimulate their doggy brains with all day, maybe read books or play on the computer?

(I don't really sunbath but I do have a garden hammock. And the rain is actually pouring down as I type but maybe the weather is better out around the summer home...)

So sorry but until next week, when the pot plants at home needs watering etc. and unless I can make the dongle connect for more than a minute at a time in the summer home, goodbuy for now. I'm off AAAAAAGGGGGGAAAAAAIIIIIINNNNNN!
