My 14hh pony has an injury & is going to be off for about 6 months, we have done really well this summer, unaff eventing & some smaller classes senior BSJA. Paul Crago who teaches me has a horse coming in to sell, about 16hh, & the owner is happy for me to have some lessons on him, Paul is positive about this, because he says I will be very rusty when I get back on Kizzy again. I am just worried because the horse is huge compared to Kizzy, & I'm only 5'1", what if I can't ride him properly & spoil him, he's a nice 1.20 horse so jumping way bigger than me & Kizzy, but apparently safe & straightforward. I just don't want to get on him & look silly & make loads of mistakes, though as a pro I'm sure Paul wouldn't let me ride him if he thought it was a bad idea, I know they're all being nice, but I am a bit scared about it all.

You'll be fine.
You seem to be a capable rider and I don't think your instructor, or the horses owner, would suggest you ride the hrose if you weren't up to the job.
I jumped up from a 12.2hh to a 15.2hh then up to 17hh. It is a bit different, but you'll adjust and if the horse is a straightforward type then that should make it easier. Main thing is to relax and enjoy it

If your trainer thinks the horse suits you and he'll be around to help with schooling the horse every so often and giving you regular lessons on him it sounds like a sensible idea. Being able to get a few lessons on him before you decide is also a really great opportunity and a lot more than you would get if you were looking for another horse in the open market.

The only thing to conside is what will happen in 6 months' time. Will you be able to afford and ride two horses? If not, what is the plan? If it doesn't seem workable you might want to consider loaning something for over the winter rather than buying.

im only 5'1 and ride a 16.1hh you will be fine some smaller horses are actually harder than the bigger ones !!

you may then find it difficult to transfer back though xx

He will actually be at Pauls to be sold, & I can have lessons with Paul at his house until the horse is sold, so not for me to buy, just to ride short term while he is prepared to sell. Can't have another one as have 2 already, tho both off at the mo.

In that case go for it, what have you got to lose? My boy has been off work for 5 motnhs and I've ridden anything and everything I can get my hands on from a 14hh Section D to a 17.1 IDx via a 15.2 cob and a 16hh TB! It's fantastic experience and great fun. Some have been angels and others total demons - but I like those best!
