I have been fighting feather mites just like I have read a few of you on here have too. I have tried feather mite powder... Nothing! I wormed with equest pramox as I heard that killed them and she was almost due for a wormer anyway.... Her scabs and lesions healed but the stamping has not stopped! Iam now going to try frontline but was wondering if the new frontline combo was just as safe for horses? It is supposed to stop eggs hatching, maybe just fleas but thought its worth a go! If still no joy then It will be the injections from the vet! :(

Also, as well as advice on the combo, I have a flea shampoo... Would that be safe??? The active ingredients are pyrethins and piperonyl butoxide. Any one know much about those? I'm trying anything I can as I have heard they are awful to get rid of!!

Not really that relevant to frontline but since it's about mites...

My lad was having the occasional stamp, but no rubbing and no lesions. Since he has thickened skin from previous mite problems before I got him, I try to nip this kind of thing in the bud. Some of the fly sprays - I'm afraid I can't remember which one! - act on other wrigglies. Dermoline also does a good range of shampoos - tea tree is good, or the insecticidal shampoo. I used a combination of the dermoline shampoos, and the spray till he stopped itching, then use pig oil on his feathers. Once all the mites etc have gone, the pig oil is supposed to stop them clinging to the hair, and suffocate any lurkers.

All under control now - and no injections needed :D

I think that combo is in fact a flea treatment and a wormer for cats and dogs so I personally wouldnt use it for mites just the spot on for fleas which is much cheaper too. I have always used the spray as it is direct onto the area required and hasnt got to find its way to the legs

Hi, I have 2 that have had and sometimes have mites! on 1st itching I go straight for dectomax injections 10 days apart with a change of bed (if winter and theyre in at night) at the time of the second jab. I find this doesnt always work on its own so I follow it up with frontline spray a week later (hard work but I leave feathers on) this, followed by pig oil and sulpher works for me. sorry I dont know about the frontline combo though.
if having the vet out twice is too expensive I think the front line a week or so appart may work well too (though its expensive as well). once i did this I had no problems until new horses re introduced them.

theresa-f sent me a really good email with advice as well:D

Thanks! I will avoid the combo and stick to regular frontline. I have looked up the ingredients in the shampoo I have and there are other insecticides out their for horses with the same ingredients so I will give that a go seeing as I already have it and she will need a wash down after our hack tomorrow!

Thanks again for your advice everyone! :)

Just looked at the dermoline insecticidal shampoo and it has the exact same ingredients as the flea shampoo I have so will def try it tomorrow! If any help I will repeat in 10 days with dermoline to treat any eggs!
