My horse still has mites and I really don't know what to go with next having tried lots of things so far???
I want to use frontline spray but I am a but dubious as he stamps when i treat the lice bites and I rekon the spray will really sting and make stamping super bad. Also I lice powdered him on thursday, so should I put the frontline all over as I guess they will just move on up his legs if i just spray them. Also how much should I give him (16.1 WBxTB), I know you can OD on it and I don't want to cause him yet more probs.

My plan was to do the Shampoo again then frontline spray after??? good plan???

there is a cattle treatment for lice, its not legal for equines but it can be used, go into a farm place and say that you want to treat you pet cow for lice.

it comes in a seethrough liquid and you use about 40-50 ml i think (depends of size) its brill everything will be dead in 24-36 hours excluding the horse of course.

i will try and get the name of it

Thankyou! I googled it and got up loads of science papers which I will now read but was it Coopers Spot on Isecticide??? seems to be a good one on paper any way! will see if I can buy some of the local dairy farmer!

DONT!!!! use Frontline it is a breathing inhibitor and can kill horses or so I have been reliably informed . I know of a case where it killed a litter of puppies and its licenced for dogs and cats.

i tried frontline spray when my horse had them and it did nothing. he got 2 injections of dectomax 2wks apart and that sorted them. it's not licensed for horses but it works really well.

I used insecticidal (sp) dog shampoo two baths two weeks apart - did the job

QR I used frontline on my cob when he had mites and treated him twice for them with a 2 week interval between sprayings and he has never suffered with them since.
I clipped off his feathers and gave his legs a good clean with hibiscrub. Allowed to dry and then sprayed the following day. I sprayed his legs outside ( not in the stable) for ventilation reasons. His bedding was removed and stable disinfected with jeyes fluid and water and then two weeks later I did the same again.
It is important if anyone is treating mites, or lice and their horses are stabled to make sure any possibly infected bedding is removed so as to reduce the chances of the horse becoming re infected again from hatching eggs or larvae. I know all the reading up I did on this subject persuaded me to remove the bedding as the little blighters can live in the environment for a time period long enough to cause re- infection. As for frontline being dangerous, I have used the stuff for years and swear by it as a flea killer on cats and dogs. So long as anyone using it wears gloves and suitable clothing and the animal is sprayed and kept in a well ventilated area then they should be fine.
I know that neither myself or any animals I have sprayed over the last 20 years plus have never been affected by it.
Incidentally I have used it on dogs, cats, ferrets, rats and a horse and all have been fine.
I think it is the same with any treatment you can apply topically yourself at home really. It is important to have common sense at all times when using products like this and to always read the label, follow instructions and don't exceed recommended doses for any animal.
Sorry if this seems patronising but after reading someone's comments saying not to use the stuff I wanted to add my tuppence worth.

Cheers Chaps! will ring the vet tomoz and get some Frontline. Going to re shampoo his legs again tomorrow too and will clear his bed and move his stable to the one next to his and wash the old one out and then lice powder all his rugs, wash his numahs and see if i can't get the bloody things to F*** off!!! Fingers crossed!!! thanks again for all your very helpful posts!
