struggling to ride i have a young tb gelding whos getting vvery fresh coz roads are to icey and school is harder than the road. we have been lunging him but yard owner says lunging aint benafical to a horse first iv heard.

It all depends on how you are lunging him, for how long and on what sort of surface. Like lots of things it can be great for the horse when done properly and in moderation

When they are young like that I don't think there is any substitute for riding as lunging doesn't exercise their minds.
Mine certainly isn't young anymore and you could lunge him for hours and he'd still need to be worked (but then he is stabled 24/7 at mo)

I've read that lunging young horses too often can be detrimental to their joints etc as it's constant circling (and in a pessoa it might improve their way of going but doesn't stop it being a circle). Better to long-rein I'd have thought, especially as ex-racer as its joints will have already taken quite a battering (if broken at 2). Not fully developed until aged 6 or so...

Agree with BeckyD, why not long rein him? You can keep his interest and get him supple by putting in some circles, serpentines, etc. If yu haven't long reined before I can tell you its easier than you think!.

Not sure if you know but using all caps is considered shouting and is rude.

Can you ride him around the edges of some fields? Contact the farmers first of course to ask.
