Frozen AI?????

Hello all, could anyone tell me if they have had success with Frozen AI? I know it can work but how long did it take - love to hear some stories

Im planning to put my mare to Limbo, but im feeling cautious as so far away etc?

We used frozen years ago but it was a disaster but it was an experament for both ourselves and our vet.
We have two mares this year being covered by frozen but the vets are very good and the semen is fairly good too.I think that you need to choose your vet carefully and make sure the stallion you are using both freezes and thaws well.

I know nothing about breeding horses but the Y.O where I keep my horse wanted to use frozen semen for AI for her mare. She and my friend went to the airport to collect it and drove straight to her vets from there where her mare was staying. On arrival the vet looked at the semen under the microscope and said it was only 30% viable and what sperm were viable looked like they had been doped! Unfortunately the mare developed a reaction to the semen anyway and although she was treated for this (which was a large undertaking as from what I gather it was a large reaction) she was impregnated again but this failed to take and the Y.O was sadly left with a £5k vets bill/failed AI attempt. I think there was some controversey at the time about the quality of the chilled semen or the way it was transported.
 
Find a specialist stud who know what they are doing with frozen.

Took my mare to Twemlows last year, she was immediately scanned on the Friday we arrived and I was told our timing was spot on.
She had AI with Frozen semen from Jaguar Mail on the Sunday. Took first time.
She stayed at the stud for 42 days to make sure and then came home.
French Stallions stored the semen with Stallion AI and also advised using Twemlows, this was a bit factor why we went there.


This year we will be using frozen again but hope to stay up north.
 
Have had two frozen babies, one from Canada and one from the USA, the canadian is due to foal herself in June this year!

Both mares took 1st attempt, in fact the second stallion I used has a very impressive fertility rate from frozen with 84% of mares bred in 2007, and 80% of mares bred in 2008 getting pregnant at the first attempt.

You need to handle it very carefully and I would recomend a good experienced AI centre, no offence to the average Vet, but if you are splashing out on Frozen you want the best chance of conception. Intensive management is necessary, correct defrosting and if the mare is not in her prime then an endoscopic procedure might be necessary.
 
Thanks for all the response/advice, much appreicated - well knock-outs seamen is at Twemlows so I could ither send her up there I guess or give them a call. I was planning to use OakEquine in Essex, they are AI vets and have a special centre for this but I dont know just how experienced against the likes of Twemlows they are??
 
If the semen is stored at Stallion AI then I would, if she does not take first time then there is no problem getting further deliveries as its just next door.

Suggest you go see or book on a course to make the day worthwhile.
 
PF was inseminated with frozen last year. She stayed pregnant on the second cycle and the Little Cigar is the result. So in my experience it was great (even though vet warned that the stallions semen wasn't great quality), but I understand frozen needs VERY careful and precise management.

Oak Equine are very experienced Marc has many years experience in Holland and Germany before setting up in this country.
