I am just in the process of using frozen. We are on a rollercoaster ride at present.... Mare went to local surgery for the implanting, its a long story but the upshot is she did conceive first time, BUT with twins!! So we have had to have one pinched, 4 days later yet another scan and this time they are not too sure if it is on its own or there is still the twin there!! So we have to wait another 10 days...
Nothing wrong with using frozen, but the science has to be much more precise, hence a stay in "hospital" for the mare and scans twice a day in the run up to ovualtion and then every six hours just before ovulation. The vets where fantastic, but i never thought about the implications of twins i was more concerned that she would conceive at all as she is a maiden mare. She is also TB and i beleive that this is quite common in TB's, however, i am now on tender hooks for the next ten days.
I have inseminated two mares with frozen this time around - still waiting to see the results and whether the mares are in foal or not.
The semen we used yesterday was of excellent quality 70% motility and over 60% progressively motile. Good velocity on them too, so I am as hopeful as I would be had we used chilled.
My mare is at Twemlows Stud, Im using Crown Z frozen semen, I dropped her off last saturday 7th June and they inseminated her yday ....
fri 13th eeeeak lol
Fingers crossed for the scan in 15 days....i'll let you know.
Ive never used frozen before, although I have used chilled and my other mare took 1st time.
You just need the right people....and of course quality semen....and a fertile mare! It sounds sooooooo god darn easy doesnt it!
Good luck

You won't get better people than Twemlows so that should help.

I'm not sure about that
Willesley are pretty bloody good with frozen too. Experienced studs/vets, good quality semen, and fertile mares with no history of any fluid-type problems, are essential for success in this area.
I'm now waiting for some scans to check for some frozen-thawed inseminations performed with sperm harvested from the testes at the time of gelding. Quite exciting
I used frozen twice. Both mares took first time. Over here it is very laid back even when using frozen. I take the horse to the vet at about 8am. If he says she is ready, I take the horse on to the stud, where she is inseminated. We then take her home and wait to see if she comes back into season or not. Simple, cheap and effective!
We have frozen semen for our two lads but have not used it this year because I dont want to send my mares and foals away from home (which I would have to do if going down the frozen route). Would have used chilled off Vision while he is in Holland but the rider wants him to concentrate on his training, so this is why we only have the frozen available for him.
Of the people who have used our Vision semen they are getting pregnancies either on first or second attempts, but thankfully its not been down to the semen, only the mares and inseminators....
