Frozen feet - what boots to get?

Spent the whole morning at the yard today with my feet so cold they hurt. Was wearing my v.old hunter wellies for yard work then rode in my old aquacats. So need some new boots but what to go for? I'd like some boots that I can wash the mud off and ride in rather than change into other boots.

Option 1 is get some cheap boots (i.e. the DH copy of the MH rimfrost riders that are down to £20) to try and warm my feet for the winter and get some new Aquacats/half chaps for summer? (though I'm having trouble tracking down some more Aquacats!)

Option 2 is to get some expensive Dubarry's/Ariats for all year round to ride and work in (I usually wear trainers for working in summer anyway so doesn't matter that they might be too warm)

Option 3 is to try some mid range boots like the Dublin Valley Tall boots for all year round and trainers for working in summer.

What's your experience of these products and what would you recommend? Is it worth splashing the cash on the expensive ones?

Either MH Rimfrost Riders or Muck Boots riding wellies.
Or, for short boots I have Ariat Arctics (I think they've been superseded by the Bromont now) - I have very very poor circulation and since I started wearing the MH Rimfrosts for riding and the Ariats for yard work I haven't had cold feet once!
Well worth the money IMO

Aah, thanks for the advice jnb, just looked at the muck boot riding wellies (didn't know a riding version existed) and they're not a bad price. Also it says they have an Achilles protector which is great. I've got incredibly sore heels at the moment as I've developed these bony 'spurs' (I'm evolving!) over the last few years, apparently from strain on the achilles tendon and they flare up every now and then. Might just give those a go! Thanks again

The Dh boots rub like hell. They're cheap and feel like it.

My feet hurt today too, they're still sore now

I have just convinced OH to buy me some muckboots

You can get the riding version for about 50 pounds which IMO is good.

Totally freaked out now!! I was just about to post on here to everyone that is suffering from cold feet!!

Feeling very smug as my lovely Mum has bought me the most lovely boots for Christmas!! They are Ariat Bromont long leather boots. I have been hacking and schooling in them (usually wear ariat paddock boots and half chaps which leads to ice block feet!!), anyway for the first time ever I have not had cold feet, and its been blooming cold here this wkend!! We bought them from DH in Olney.

They are thermally insulated and waterproof, I stuck them under the tap today as they were covered in mud, and very comfortable. They are also nice and long, I can't normally wear off the peg leather boots as they come up a bit short. I would say that they are also smart enough for hunting and competing in the winter. They are also tough enough to wear around the yard.

Thoroughly recommend them (as you can probably tell by my long reply I LOVE THEM!!!).

Believe you me I do not have slim calves, and I nearly collapsed when they fitted so well

!! They do a normal width for wee people

and a wide for the likes of me

!!! They also have a bit of stetch in them.....go on try them...you won't want to take them off!!

That is freaky Sneedy! Hmm, those Bromont boots certainly are very smart, perhaps I need to venture to a saddlery to try the Muck Boots and the Ariats on. A dangerous excursion however the week before Christmas, as I'll want everything! I knew I should have got tickets for Olympia!

Tee hee, no he hasn't, he's sitting next to me enthralled in the XBox and I can usually get him to agree to anything in that state as he's not really listening! However, Chrimbo pressies this year were meant to be riding gear of a different kind, he's just finished customising his Harley and I'm meant to be getting all kitted out in bike riding gear! Perhaps the boots can pass as motor bike boots too! 2 birds, 1 stone!

The Bromonts are fantastic! I was riding in mine today (3 horses, 4 hours of riding) & my feet did still have a blood circulation even in this cold! Around the yard I wear my hunters with wellie socks which are really toastie, or you can get special short wellie socks that can be worn with muckers on cold days.

Ah ha, am dropping hints and seems to be working. I think I may even have convinced him to come put some jumps up for me tomorrow too! Ta Daaah!

I have just bought these Dublin boots - LINK HERE .

I wore them for the first time today and they are great - really light, so comfy - they felt like slippers when I put them on! I did a 15km pleasure ride in the bitter cold and just had one thin pair of socks on and my feet were toasty all day. They were very nice to ride in too.

They cost about £47 I think from my local saddlers.

I wear the long Woof boots ive had them 12 monthsand theyre brill think they cost around £40. Theyre not the most waterproof boots in the world ( dont go wading in them) but they wash off nicely, really cosy, great to ride in and are velcro fasterning so are extendable for xl calfs. Derby house do a cheaper version at £20.

I really have to recommend Tyne Muckboots, I have been wearing mine with just thin socks in -16C and my feet have stayed toasty.

Sneedy - So glad to read they're nice as I have some long Bromonts on the way to me from DH as well! If anybody wants to get a pair, DH is the cheapest Ive found - they're offering 10% off and free postage so think they cost me about £145 (£20 cheaper than anywhere else). I plan to compete in mine, my Ariat jod boots & gaiters are just too damn cold. My toes were so cold yesterday at BSJA, cant wait to get them!

For winter lessons etc. I wear Cavalry Sport boots which are SO cosy. They're also lovely to ride in. I wouldn't use them for general stable work thought as mine seem to rub my heel if I walk too much in them! I won my pair so I dont feel I need to use them for anything other than winter lessons / home riding!

At the moment I am riding in Rimfrost Riders but I can't wear them for waundering around in!
I have 2 pairs of heel risers in them because they are just too dam long in the leg!
I have size 3 feet very short legs and very wide calfs.
Nothing feets me.....is it only me that has this problem???

Ariat Grasmere boots..... I suffer badly from cold feet. Bought these last week & I don't want to take them off.

Sooooo comfetable & my feet were toasty all weekend. I can't recomend them enough.
So much so that I'm thinking of getting the bromont ones as well to compete in during the winter.... if I get that lottery win!!

Another fan of Tyne Muckboots here too. Haven't been in temperatures that cold but they always keep me warm and toasty

I can second Ariat Grasmeres. So so comfortable, waterproof and v v warm. It was -5 this morning at the yard and i was breaking froxen over water troughs in the fields and they didn't let any water in and i am yet to get cold feet (i normally have v cold feet) and i havn't warn any thick socks just normal dress socks!! So worth the money!

I have quite possibly the coldest feet in the world

and invested in a pair of MH rimfrosts this year. I can throughly recommend them as I have not had cold feet once this year and best of all no chilblains

You can sometimes pick up a bargain on ebay, but I would say they are worth every penny of what they cost new. The new Mark Todd thermal boots look quite good too and seem well priced but I have never tried them.

I've got Ariat Artics and Ariat Glacier boots - the short ones, the Bromonts have the same lining etc. they are very cosy, keep my toes nice and warm.
