Frozen Padlocks

Just a word of warning ...

Our farrier went to a clients this morning and had to go and come back later as all the padlocks were frozen solid and no one could get on the yard.

Luckily he was only the Farrier and not a vet on an emergency visit

I have to hold a lighter under mine for a few seconds to melt the ice in the key hole. I keep mine at grass livery so its easy enough to climb over the gate.

I've been having this problem, but a bit of persistent breathing on them eventually did the trick! Mind you it was -13 this morning!!

Same here. Always carry a can of de icer, spray the lock up and voila!! No problems any more!!!!

You musn't breath in them as your breath has a lot of moisture in it - which will then freeze. According to the helpful email I was sent at work you should heat the key up with a lighter.

I told that to the farrier and he said it was a combination padlock.

Oh yes they do just freeze again...but unfortunately it was all I had this morning

if I remember I'll take de-icer with me 2morrow, not sure if we have a lighter in the house?

A farrier!!!!!! and he couldnt get somthing hot to thaw out the lock .PMSL.A bit of snow and everybody has gone loopey.

i was about to say good job there wasnt a fire!!

but then fires hot so i guess it would melt it!!

I however had to go into the petrol station before filling up to ask for a cup of warm water as couldnt get my key in the petrol cap! lol

Good tips, stupid me was in a hurry this morning and poured hot water on them, then tonight had a mad panic and two hungry dogs when I couldn't open them this evening.

Also electric gates are good at freezing together!

As sad before -deicer on the lock works everytime!! As for frozen water pipes (mine r at the min) im at a loss bloody nightmare! Sorry random sidetrack from op then

One of the ladies on our yard came up with the idea of tying a waterproof bag (think its a kagoul bag / umbrella bag) to the chain and putting the padlock once locked inside it to fully enclose the lock. It works a treat, we haven't had it frozen since

The de-icer wouldn't work for mine! So for the last few weeks the padlock has been nestled inside a pair of old riding gloves and that works a treat! Although the farmer thinks I'm mad :-(
