Has anyone heard of this before?

I have bought my Vivaldi semen and have discovered that even though I have only bought one batch of frozen (so three straws) if the mare takes first time I can use the other two on another mare with full covering certificates etc?

I always thought you had to return the semen to the stud if unused (that is what I had to do with Pro-Set)...

Most stations will inform you of their conditions, whether you:
- have to return the unused straws
- or if you can use them on other mares

HOWEVER ... and here is the catch ... you PAY for ONE COVERING CERTIFICATE, not three, so by using the unused straws on other mares without paying for the extra covering certificate, you may end up with a foal without papers.

Some studs do do this....they will sometimes require you to pay a smaller fee in order to get the covering cert... I know that Zuuthoeve and Enterbrook do things thins way.

I asked about that ColourFan but they said a certificate will be produced for each straw once a positive pregnancy was confirmed. There was no mention of an extra cost.

I think colourfan is correct though, it is best to check with them directly. When we AI'd there was enough for more then one mare but I would have had to pay the stud fee for any other certificates.

did you specifically ask them about whether they will charge for the covering certificate?

if not i would ask this before inseminating any other mares as it is a bit late once she gets in foal!

1 dose of frozen semen is often more than 1 straw, it depends on the size of the straw & how "tightly" the sperm are packed!!

If they are 0.5ml it could be anywhere up to 8 x 0.5ml straws per insemination dose - although if you do low dose insemination you could get up to 4 inseminations from 1 dose.

Some studs are now freezing in 1ml single dose straws though, so it might be worth checking with the stud who froze it?

Thanks... sorry, I presumed a straw was a dose

I did ask about the covering certificate specifically, but did not accentuate whether I had to pay for it. I will email now and find this out. The plan was only to use one this year, however, right now I might be trying with two mares over the next couple of months if the first takes first time.

Its the same deal as I got on Vivaldi, and i asked and yes its 3 doses and if you get more than one pregnancy (whether it be same mare next year or multimple mares this year) they will issue more than one cover certificate.

I'd check very carefully with the stud as generally the straws are for one mare only. If used on others (& confirmed in foal) you may have to pay further stud fees - or end up with foals that can't be registered.

Hi there, when exporting frozen semen from my stallion, I sell X amount of doses at a fixed price per dose and the mare owner can use them as they wish , they then get a covering cert. for the mare/mares.
2 doses of frozen from my stallion are advised per insemination but mares are getting 100% conception rate with 1dose.
