Frozen troughs

Never has for me, I just go out to find the thing frozen in place in the mornings

I don't even bother, just plug the troughs in to the mains.

There were a lot of quite inventive methods discussed, tried and used a month or so back.

If you are breaking ice, use an axe or something sharp it is far more efficient and MIND your eyes, ice shards hurt! Removing the broken ice (use a sieve) and topping up with hot water helps. So does insulating the trough from the wind.

I packed mine round with straw which seemed to help.

I tried that once, the sods ate it for desert!

packing straw in a sack just made it into more of a game for them

I have just bought a cheap football - I expect it will keep him occupied during the day and do nothing to stop freezing at night then!
