I just wish so much I could get on with rebacking my horse and be riding him!

I work full time with no facilities at the yard so can only do my youngster at the weekends. Saturday it was pouring. Great! Decided not to drag him up to the nearby school for us to both just get soaked. Today it was raining again, I took him to the school up the road anyway. After lunging him I got on him and he freaked out. (He didn't do this last week) I got my OH to lead me round and after a few panicks he walked ok so I left it on a good note and got off.

I'm just getting so frustrated because I'm not getting anywhere with my gelding. I have been so excited to bring him in to work but it always seems the good weather comes when I'm at work. The bad weather comes at the weekends. Doing him once a week if definitely not enough, as we're just not making progress. I feel like giving up for now and waiting until the evenings are light, but feel I've been waiting for that for soooo long!!

I am so fed up with the winter weather, mud and having no facilities :(
Or at least if I could just work part time!! Only in my dreams :(

Assuming you need a full time income ,could you consider a job with a shift pattern that meant you had time off in the day when it is light and worked more in the evenings or at night? Clocks change end of next month anyway .

Its so frustrating isn't it? I don't get up the yard till 7.15pm most evenings with no time to ride my 4yo. Weekends are then a mad rush to ride, do chores, pay bills and all those other boring things you can't do in the week!!

I keep telling myself spring will be here soon..... Failing that find a rich man so you can work PT ;-) Hmm easier said than done!

Hi, my job is the crappest in the world, but I work shifts which enables me to have more time for the horses so I stick it out. I work either 5.45am til 1.45 or 1.30pm til 10.45pm so even in the winter I have daylight hours everyday.

I know shifts don't work for everyone depending on your circumstances, but it's something to think about as it definately gives me more daylight hours to myself.

I have a 3 yr old who will be 4 in april and i work 8-4 or 10-5 and work thorugh my lunch so i can ride every other day. she gets ridden in the wind, rain, etc, yes i know it is difficult when first starting them but little every day is much better than leaving til the weekend. I was out riding last week in snow and 2oC but they still get ridden. It is hard work and not nice but she has now been in work 2 months and i am pleased with how she is going.

I asked my work if I could change my hours to 8-4 and was rejected. That would make things easier! I also wish I could work through my lunch break but I work at a service which needs to be open until 6pm Mon-Fri.
It doesn't help that the field is 10mins from the yard and then the school I use is another 10 minutes from the yard. So it takes atleast a good half hour just to get him in, ready and to the school!

Hurry up Spring!!! :(

Hold on spring is round the corner and the misery of the dark wet and mud will be but a distant memory!!

Could you manage to move to a yard with lights and a school? I have a tb who is all or nothing and a 4 yr old who I'm finding it hard to bring on with any consistency as we had to move yards (old one was sold and we were told we could use school at new one but it was then locked for the winter!!!!) so I do understand if we hadn't just been told we are getting a new school with lights this summer I would certainly be moving as it's impossible otherwise!!!

Chin up though, not long now!

Thanks for your comment :)

I have and keep considering moving. I love where I am because it is so relaxed and quiet. The horses have become so chilled out!
I have my own 5 acre field which I keep my 3 horses in. A huge field shelter and a stable all for a good price.
The yard closest to me does have spaces, is not much more expensive and has 2 schools, although neither are great, both get waterlogged. I've considered moving there but there are a few things putting me off.
Firstly it is shared grazing. I quite like a field to myself and then there's no, 'your horse kicked mine.' Which I have found at previous yards. Not necessarily with my horse, but other liveries at each others throats!
Secondly, not long ago someone broke in to the yard and cut all the horses tails off! If that had been my horse I would have been so devastated and sickened at the thought of some scumbag touching my horse!

And then all other liveries local to where I am are full at the moment unfortunately.

Lots of sympathy...

I love my yard, but we don't have any lights in the school. I work a 9 - 6 and my yard is 40 mins drive away...

So at the moment, I get up at 5am two days a week and 6am one day a week in order to ride. Which makes me feel like a complete zombie at work.

Roll on lighter days!!

Oh gosh I feel for you and can sympathize! :( You must be very dedicated to get up and ride at that time, good on you! :)

Thumbs up to roll on lighter days :)

This winter is definitely taking its toll mentally!
I am fairly lucky that my yard is 15 mins from work and its on my way home too. I get there at 6pm 3 times a week to ride and then either ride one day at the weekend or both.
But my horse is new , got him Dec 24th, and although I can get some riding in often it has been cut short or cancelled due to bad weather ( outdoor school only) . Its either gale force winds, fog, ice - it just seems to go on & on. AND why is it every weekend day I can make is pouring with rain??? The day I have to visit friends & family its sunny & lovely. But you bet the day I pick to ride & be with my horse its crap.
I think it is even getting to my horse - the dark evening rides in the school.....I'm sure he's thinking - do we have to keep doing this - its cold, its foggy there are spooks in the fog & I just want to be in my nice stable & eat my hay!
Lately I've agreed with him & we've stayed in and he's had a long groom instead!
But another 4 weeks & the light will be with us.
Please pray for a dry-ish summer.................................:)
