Fudge had surgery today as the results of the lameness investigation on his left hind weren't conclusive and the vets were not able to get a clear scan as his tendon sheath too swollen.

He has had his annular ligament and the surrounding tissue cut to releave the pressure on his tendons.

He has a longitudinal tear of his deep digital flexor tendon and slight damage (the word begins with F) of the superficial digital flexor tendon. He's also going to need to have his tendon sheath medicated which carries additional risks.

He's unlikely to ever be completely sound but the vet is hopeful that he will able to be turned out normally given time and maybe even hack in walk and trot eventually. This is the best case scenario.

To say I am gutted is an understatement

On the up side he's awake and standing after the anaesthetic and I might be able to visit him at the weekend.

but at least he is ok that must be a relief at least! what are you going to do now are you going to look for another horse to ride?

Oh L, I'm so so sorry to hear this.

Who operated on him?! I know you must be absolutely devastated at the moment, i know i was this time last year when Alfie was down there, but try to remain hopeful that he will be able to have some sort of riding career ahead of him in the future. Exactly a year ago, Alfies surgeon painted a very bleak outlook for Alfie as he just wasn't responding to treatment and they said at best he would be ok as a lame field ornament, 12 months on he's sound and ready to compete at affiliated dressage again. Back then i never expected to sit on him again let alone contemplate competing him. It's amazing what the right rehabilitation and time can do and he really is in the best possible place with amazing people there looking after him. We're all thinking of you and Fudge and we all hope he makes a good recovery for you.

Poor Fudge. Atleast you know whats wrong now and how to treat it. Also as someone said above some horses do beat the odds. 11 weeks ago Lucy was diagnosed with a rare illness and given a less than 50% chance and the only treatment was steroids that could trigger her laminitas. But she is still here naughty as ever much to the vets amazment and some of her lumps are actualy going down!!!
So come on Fudge you can do it beat the odds. sending every poss ((((((((((vibe))))))))) we have and lots of ((((((((((hugs))))))))) to.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

This news has absolutely crushed me, Fudge is my dream horse and I love him more than anything.

Hopefully he'll be well enough for me to visit in a few days and then come home. I really miss him even though I know he's getting the best possible care.

As long as he's eventually pain free and able to go out and play with his horsey friends then I'll be happy, although obviously I would love to ride him again.

B, Sarah Boys Smith is the vet dealing with Fudges case she's been excellent.
