I am going to Hunter clip my wooly TB after the weekend and I was wondering if a 300g full neck will be too heavy to have on her whilst she is out at night? She is in a 200g no neck now and has grown quite a wooly coat. She is out at night and in during the day wearing a stable sheet and hood.

Hunter clip, TB and out at night I would be having more on than that. You will probably have that on in the daytime minimum but you might find you will want at least another layer at night.

I would agree with this if she is a bit nesh as you say - knowing TBs as soon as they've started to feel cold they throw weight away and it can be really hard to get back on!
My wimpy TB is unclipped at the moment and living out in a MW stable rug with MW rug over the top!

Swap her round - so in at night out by day - and the weight initially will probably be ok.

However, why not just give her a blanket clip - or high trace initially? You can always take more off, but once it's off it's off.

The minute I clip my wussy TB she has a full neck heavyweight on in the day with me piling more on throughout winter... She tends to be stabled at night though but I am sure it isnt quite cold enough yet for piling more on otherwise by the middle of winter she wont be able to stand up!!!

Keep checking her - you don't want her to be too hot. One of mine had her first ever clip over the weekend - all off except legs. She's not heavy set and I thought she'd need a medium rug on, but to my surprise she is still in the same lightweight (with neck) as she was before I clipped her and is still toasty warm underneath even late last night and early this morning when I checked on her (and she's out 24x7 at the moment). I'm being paranoid and keep checking her, but she's still lovely and snug.

Wow fleabittengrey, two rugs already?!

I'd say it depends on if she's a very poor doer or not. OH will be clipping his TB soon and he will be naked in the stable (maybe light stable rug for colder nights), out in a light weight during the day or naked depending on weather. Scout went last year with a high trace and only had two rugs in the very cold spell. TB mare in foal is naked, and the other two tb mares are naked unless its to pour rain. And we're on a big hill!

A friend's TB was Hunter clipped and warm (even in the snow) in a Rambo Supreme.

I have an unclipped TB who's in at night and already in a 400g rug when the temp's around 7 degrees (and he's only lukewarm in the morning!). I'm currently wondering what the flippin heck I'm going to do if it gets down to minus 10 again this winter!

Go by her own temperature.

My full TB was out in a rain sheet and I've had to take it off her because she was sweating up underneath it. She's now out naked and although unclipped has a very fine coat.

The wimpy ones of mine are not clipped yet and get turned out just in rainsheets, I'm going to clip next week and they will go onto M/W Amigos, which are 200g I believe. In the depths of winter they will be in H/W turnouts (300-350g) and if really, really cold will get a 100g liner each underneath.

I have already taken neck and belly off :( I feel terrible now as I was thinking you would all say she was too hot as secretly, Ive had it on her already!!! :D

thanks for all the knowledgeable replies, I will be swaping her over when the clocks change and clipping her out around the same time if we can manage the drying time after she is ridden until then!

OMG i'm so glad my TB isn't wimpy she is out 24/7 and no rug at the moment, she is turned away for the winter so going to be going as long as possible without a rug, she is getting a little fluffyer but still lots of weight on and looking really good, people ask me what breeding she is as she doesn't look at all TB at the mo. :D

I took IP down to Spillers weighbridge last weekend and the lady questioned her breed and said she was almost certainly warmblood!!! err... no, ex-racer from ascot... tee hee hee!! Lets say she is a little on the 'well' side at the minute!

I think it's a case of trial and error tbh it's difficult isn't it because you don't want to under rug so they loose weight but then you don't want to over rug because it's the same effect weight loss! Just play about and see how he goes
