Full Clipped Horse- How many rugs are you guys putting on?!

I know the weather is set to turn really cold this weekend.

She is currently wearing: Double duvet, thermatex and a thick stable rug.

With the weekends weather looming, i was wondering if i should add another! Would it make much diffeence, i think she is warm enough?

What is everyone elses ponios wearing at the moment?

What WILL they be wearing this weekend?!

Rusty was fully clipped out (except for legs) yesterday and is currently sporting thin stable rug, under a big beefy turnout rug ..... I might be adding a sheet under those for this weekend ..... esp as its the first time in 5ys he's been clipped (I've got him on loan and his owner didnt do anything with him over the winters ... she's owned him 5yrs)

I hope he is gonna be warm enough, must be a terrible shock

My horse is fully clipped and has full neck under rug with full neck heavy weight stable rug over top. He is a section D but still a big softy as i have always treated him like a TB!
He'll stay with same rugs unless i find hin cold one morning!
 
My cob is fully clipped but he's a very hot horse so he's only got his MW on at the moment. Am re-clipping this weekend and we're due snow so he'll probably get a fleece underneath.
 
Ok. My fully clipped TB x has a 450g HW turnout in field 6am-6pm. And will have his 400g stable rug on this weekend. And that is plenty for him. He has always been a very hot boy however (which is why he has had a full clip!!!). If I put any more on him at just a few degrees below zero he would sweat buckets!!!!! We will save the serious layers for if/when we get some serious winter weather> It just shows that they are all different.
 
my hanovarian is an absolute whimp when it comes to the cold!!! she is in a 350g heavy weight horseware ireland stable rug with neck, 150g weatherbeeta under rug with neck and a newmarket fleece rug.

stupid horses lol
 
Good God...arent your horses too hot and sweaty with all those layers on?

Are we talking about in the field or in the stables overnight??

If I put that many rugs on my horse during the day, he would have dehydrated ...he loves a good gallop/play and would work up a massive head of steam!!!

i guess they are all different! my old horse had 2 hw on last winter as was wimp tb, new horse has just a hw, my friends is fully clipped and sweats in anything other than a mw at night!
 
Mine is currently in MW with neck during day (9am - 4pm) then HW (prob 400g) at night as I am trying to keep the weight on him this Winter. I bought him in April like a hat rack, so think he may be prone to losing weight (can't believe it as he eats anything)... may well out a fleece or waffle rug underneath this weekend and up the turnout to a HW.
 
Ours are in 300 gram weatherbeata Oricans or 450 gram PE Stormbusters depending on how they feel the cold. All clipped with legs and heads left on and all living out 24/7 with plenty of haylage.
 
I was just thinking the same, my TB is clipped and he is in a MW with neck on and he is nice and warm.

To all those who have already layered horses with rugs what will you do when winter really arrives with minus temps etc. I not having a go at anyone before people start , just interested.
 
I am sorry but I don't think horses need 3 rugs on. Your horses must feel weighed down and very uncomfortable. These days you can buy rugs in different weights, put one correct rug on the horse and change it, as the weather changes. In the old days people used a cotton sheet to keep the underside of the rugs cleaner, but 3 thick rugs is not necessary, we don't live in the arctic.

My TB is out in the field, in all weathers from 7am to 6pm. She wears a MW turnout with no neck. She is perfectly happy. At night she wears a MW stable rug with no neck. She has a very high trace clip.

If it gets very cold I will move up to HW rugs but I also change her back to thin rugs as soon as I can.
 
Pickle is full clipped and was re clipped this week. He has MW stable rug at night. MW Turnout rug in the day. He doesn't even have a neck rug, all he has is a mane!

Surely yours must be boling in all those layers!! we have some finer horses clipped out and they are in one HW rug
 
Both mine were re clipped last friday but stayed in their M/W (220g) turnouts with hoods due to the mild weather.
Q upgraded to his H/W turnout with hood (420g) on wednesday as it was colder but Spider stayed in his M/W, as after an hour in the H/W he was starting to sweat

However from last night they are both in their H/W turnouts.
I wont add any further layers unless it gets v cold i.e minus 2 or below.
I'm always amazed at the amount of layers people seem to use when it's still not very cold, but as long as the horse isn't too hot & sweating ... each to their own . I can see how different horses can be by just looking at my two.

Ill just add that my girl is nearly 21 and is bad to clip (sedation needed!) so i like to make the clip last as long as possible.

Also if you put your hund under her rugs, she is nice and warm and never sweaty....

We have 30year olds clipped that then stay out 24/7 with less rugs on than yours! one is a arab the other a nf x tb

well my tb has an "irish" clip i think (neck, chest, shoulders and most of his belly off), stabled at night in a mw to. Nice and warm. Might put his slightly heavier to on if he seems cold tommorow or sunday.

Some of the descriptions do seem a little excessive!
 
My girl is fully clipped from head to toe. At night she wears a Mark Todd HW Stable rug which is 400g, and a under rug which is 230g.
She wears equichaps as well to keep her legs warm.

My boy who is retired on grass livery is out night and day at the minute in a HW Weatherbeeta.

Both are nice and cosy at the minute..!
 
Chancer is full clipped and a gypsy cob so thick skinned. He has been wearing a 150 fill rug and is plenty warm enough as it is normally about 8. On the cooler lights, going below 5, he also has a fleece on.

They do say -3 tomorrow, so his 400 g heavy weight will go on and that will be plenty for him. -5 he will have a fleece added.

On the rare occasion is has been -8 he has the 400 and the 150 on.

If out, he has a 200 g rug and I will put the fleece or the 150 on if freezing cold during the day, ie not above 0.
 
It depends on where you are as well, and what kind of stabling/natural shelter in fields etc.

I have external stables which face the wind and no natural shelter in the fields which are on a hill. Mine have been in thick fleeces and HW for the last couple of weeks. When it gets really cold (probably this weekend) they will have fleeces and HW with necks.

During the day they run about and keep themselves warm in MW (the clipped one has a neck). These will be upgraded to HW with necks (the unclipped one feels the cold - the clipped one gets really sweaty hence the clip).

However I change the rugs depending on the weather - we had some real cold snaps and then it was mild again, so you have to able to adapt their wardrobes. This is how I justify my rug collection (now up to 79 as I accidentally bought 4 rugs this week).
 
Crikey!! My TB is fully clipped and is out in a MW with high neck. He has been getting hot at night and sweating if in anything more than one rug so currently has one with a neck which I would say is a lightweight but duvetlike so keeps him toasty. Its certainly very thin. He might get a fleece underneath tonight though because its got chillier. His stable is a funny little wooden affair which is pretty small and very cosy. Doesn't seem to get cold in there despite having the window open!!

Its easier for a horse, even an oldie, to keep themselves warm than cool themselves down. Hence i'd rather slightly under rug that over rug in any situation.

G is in HW stable w/neck at night and a MW turnout w/ neck during the day. He's fully clipped.
 
My mare's full clip is growing out so just a thermatex at night (she's getting very fluffy!) and a mw t/o without neck in the day. Hanoverian is a complete wimp so has hw mark todd stable with a fleece underneath tonight as it's a bit colder and mw t/o with neck and a fleece underneath during day. The big shire x just has one hw stable at night and a mw t/o during day as he gets really hot!
 
Melly is a complete wimp, prob my fault, but there we are! She has a Masta on with a neck during the day. She does have a light rug on (like a summer sheet) under it if its a cold day like today. In the stable she has a thin saxon, 100g under rug and a no fill T/O on. Its an exposed stable, and a very cold exposed paddock, on a hill. I rug to my girls needs, and if she werent clipped out she would prob only need her MW with hood on.
