Hi everyone. Just a question,is it ok to clip in summer? Poor Teddy is so hot and sweating buckets:( He wearing his short summer coat, but its quite dense, poor sod is so hot! So if i clip now, will it be ok? I mean we fully clipped him in winter because he was getting very sweaty and it took ages to dry,and he was happy. And just looking at him now, just standing in the field doing nothing,he is sweaty and tired already:(

Just clipped my sec a he was the same, we are supposed to be doing a show at the weekend too, not got high hopes but out his comfort before a Rosette which I think is fair enough!

I don't think there is an issue, Id rather a comfy horse than a uncomfy and sweating tired one. if you aren't bothered about having a clipped horse in the summer then go for it!! :)

I am also thinking of clipping my mare as she is so hot and doesn't get a true summer coat.

A couple of stupid questions - if I do a full body and leave her legs on - do I clip her face? Or should it just get a tidy up? Also, I take it that I have to leave a saddle patch?

Sorry to hijack!

Did my boy on Tues as he too gets too hot. I put him a fly sheet on until his fur grows back a little so he doesnt get sunburn or overheat, as he cant trap the air in his hair to keep him cool. He is so much happier!

Clip my lad all year round. In the summer he has a UV fly rug on for a week or so after the clip if it is hot to stop him getting burnt. Lot happier and cooler.

I used to clip my shire x all year. The only negative that I experienced was that the mossys used to bite and irritate his skin, especially underneath his belly, between his front legs and around his sheath - these sensitive areas were more exposed than they should have been because I was clipping him. I used net-ex sweet itch cream on his vulnerable area's and that seemed to help.

I've heard that clipped horses might be at risk of getting sun burnt skin, though I have never experienced this myself.

Yes - used to keep my coloured cob clipped throughout the summer as he hated being too hot, usually re-did clip every 4 weeks or so - he had a lot of coat! We also kept him in during the day and out at night to prevent sunburn and avoid flies etc.

we used to clip our big boy when he was in full work as he is piebald had to put fly rug on so he didnt get sunburnt but used to do a full clip but left legs and half face on :)
