Does anyone have any pictures of their horses with full clips but with legs left on???

I am thinking of leaving Grace's legs on tomorrow when she is being clipped because she gets such bad mud rash, but I am not the buggest fan of wooly legs and clipped out bodies

Someone convince me!!!

Corroy looks fab with her legs left on... This was Grace last year, I just think she looks ridiculous (excuse the cycling shorts on the back legs, she had just had her operation

Sorry, don't have any pics but think they can look very smart with their legs left on, as long as they are neatly trimmed. I always clip mine like that - don't like to think of their legs getting cold!!

I have clipped legs out in the past on the first and possibly second clip (Depending on how early in the season is is) then left them on when the weather is wetter, this way the leg hair is shorter!!
Not got any photos though...sorry!

If you try it just be careful not to clip legs too late as then you'll only get long cat hairs growing back which will look really pants!!!

I dont think its worth the hassle of clipping the legs off at this time of year when they will only grow again in about 2 weeks. I sometimes take the legs off in January once they are really, really hairy then I only have to do it once.

If her legs get really fluffy through the winter... why not full clip them this time you clip and then leave them on next time... when the mud really gets going ? That way the hair wont get quite so fluffy.
Having said that... I think it looks fine !!

These are 2 of the horse I clipped the other day..the bay has had everything off and the grey everything part form his legs

Please excuse the rider on the Bay...she loves her pony!!

Thanks everyone... I try to only clip her twice a year because she needs fully sedating every time. Last year she had one in October and one in Feb
smile.gif
Legs off the first time and then left on the second as she was only starting to come back into work at that point (clipped her because she gets rash under her saddle when she moults).

I have never left her legs on for the whole winter before

If Grace suffers from mud rash you would be better off taking the hair off. My mare also suffers with mud rash and since clipping her legs off last weekend, I have found it is a lot easier to control the mud rash - actually she now no longer has it because I can keep her legs a lot drier

Grace actually doesn't have any scabs yet, I have been leaving the mud on and brushing off and applying Keratex mud powder too as it is not an oily substance.

You see, I think dark bays and bays look great with legs left on, chestnuts have such a difference in coat colour that I just don't think it looks right

However, if it is going to be better for her, who am I to argue the fact it is not the best look for her

I hear so many contradicting comments about whether mud fever better with legs on and with legs off, I am confused

I think it depends on your circumatances, mine go out all day every day regardless of the weather, legs off means I can towel dry his legs when he comes in and pick off the start of any mudfever before applying mud gaurd. As his legs are white it means they are also easier to get clean and dry faster when we go to a competition.

Hs, Oskar is SOO CUTE! Haven't seen a big photo of him before

Re OP, FWIW I find mud fever easier to manage with legs off not on: they dry quicker and mud has less to stick to, easier to clean, dry and apply whatever potion you fancy
wink.gif
All mine tend to get clipped out legs and all once they are in at night, just cos I think they look smarter

Look how matching Osk is

ColouredFan... I have always clipped the legs off and washed them down and thoroughly dried them when they come in, but it has been pretty muddy where I am and I have just been brushing the mud off when it has dried and reapplying the Keratex Mud powder at night so it is ready for the morning.

I just don't know what to do if I am honest... she looks lovely with all her legs off, but I don't want to open her up to any mud rash this year after how bad she was 2 years ago

I cannot use anything greasy to keep the mud away because she reacts to it when boots are used for ridden work (things like Baby Oil imparticular) so that is why I have been out and bought some of the Keratex stuff.

Why dont you leave the legs on for the first clip, see how you manage with Mud fever? If its working for you now with legs on why change it? Frankie has had a patch reoccuring nearly all summer because of the damm wet weather! his legs will be clipped off at the end of October.

The problem is that I cannot clip at a later date unless I am having another full clip in Feb as I did this year... she needs fully sedating to be clipped, and with the number of times she has been sedated in the last 11 months I would like to keep it to an absolute minimum
smile.gif

That is why I am trying to make the best decision, because it has to be permanent til Feb
